I've searched and haven't really found a thread dedicated to SS MTB... really, this is a fixed gear forum if not anything. Post them up!

I scored this 1986 vintage steel Specialized Rockhopper for $60 off some dude on Craigslist. First thought that came to mind was to build a 26" SS using eBay and leftover parts I already have. I've already purchased some of the necessary things, but I'm keeping some of the original stock parts that are still usable like the wheels and brakes. Everything else is going to be spankin' new and improved.

I already have a Motobecane Outcast 29'er but that thing is built more for street use.

This is the Old School in it's original state:

The frame, fork and headset - cleaned, buffed, rust removed, touched up and waxed. Ready to be built up!

If I had that Rockhopper, I'd take that Rockhopper, and tour the **** out of it. Or make it a utility bike with a gigantic Wald 157 Basket, Brooks Flyer, Promenades, and Suntour XC Friction thumbshifters...

Sorry, I'm just jealous and really want to score an MTB of that vintage. I've got this 1" threaded XT headset gathering dust in my parts bin...

I had a utility bike for awhile, but I really wanted to compliment my 29er with a 26er - so when the winter months come I can have something available for my wife to ride if she decides to get off road.

Utility bikes are sweet, though!

Yes! This is what I do on BF, start threads out of LYING!! HAHAHAHAHAHA! :p

Thanks for the links... I swear I searched and typed "SS MTB" "Singlespeed MTB" "Single Speed Mountain Bike"... etc. and nada. I think the search function is a LIAR.

Oh wells...

I use 34/16 free and fixed. Sucks a little on the climbs, but it's nice and fast on the flats.

Offroad gearing is highly dependant on the trail and riding conditions. I ride an older 26er Monocog with 34/17 fixed and 34/15, 16, 17, 18, 20, and 22 freewheel. Most of my offroad riding is done with 34/17 or 34/18. One 16 mile trail I ride is so tight and twisty that I can't even spin out with 34/22 and even on a good day can barely make it up all the hills. My top speed on that trail is probably about 12mph with average of about 8.2-8.4 mph.

Yes. I was just curious. On the 26" I'm going to be going with 33/22 and with the 29er I roll 32/22. You're right, on some of that stuff, even with that tiny gearing you're still huffing.

Wait till 65'r posts his Kuwahara's and totally wins this thread, hahaha!

All good stuff, I just love me some hot 26er action. I'm too short to fit on any of these 29ers with their half mile long top tubes.

Anyone besides me notice that the fixed explosion happened for road bikes roughly the same time as the 29er one for mtb?

Single speed mountain bikes are awesome.

Here's a slightly out of date picture of my Mary.

My friend has one that he insists he can keep up with us on our road bikes on...it's geared at far below my road bikes very lowest gear. It's simultaneously sad and hilarious watching him try to ride it on the street
