Sorry, but the color reminds me of all of the Magnas that we have around here for $50. This color is a bit better looking, but still similar enough for me not to like it.

I think the color is gorgeous. Also, a newb education question ... I noticed the chain stays flatten out toward the seat tube, it looks cool but i'm sure there's a reasoning behind it, wondering what that is?

what's up with that little bar thats on the rear triangle near the drop outs? why is it on one side only? surly does the same thing with its instigator. why is it only on one side?

The bar is supposed to stiffen up the frame around the disc brake mount. It is only on that side because there would only be a disc brake there.

As for the flattening of the chainstays it seems it would allow you to increase tire clearance and/ or shorten the wheelbase. Not completely sure though.

looks like it might be the same color as my lemond. it looks pretty dark in this pic, but its actually a lot lighter. sort of a metal-flake look. http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=298433&postcount=163

The tubes flatten out vertically to allow for more tire clearance true, but moreso to provide verticle strength to avoid flex of the rear stays.

I DO like the color and the overall impression of the bike. Too bad your Down Unda or I'd buy one! (caveat: If and when I had the money!)

All steel chainstays are oval as they go around the tire and aproach the bottom bracket. This is so there is enough clearance for the tire, chainrings and cranks. The small tube that bridges the stays just reinforces that area for the disc brake. A lot of torque or twist gets put into the frame when you reef on brakes when you have discs - think all your forward motion trying to twist the disc caliper off the frame. Yup, that's a lot.
