I have a trek 1000 (2004) that i recently purchased. I wanted to upgrade to better pedals so i bought brand new Shimano Ultegra PD-6601 Pedals for $50 from a bike shop thats going out of bussiness. was this a good deal? and are they good pedals? also i was wondering what type of shoes i should purchase along with them? i was looking into nike poggios. and if anybody has any recommedations for what type of seat i should get for long distances, i would appreciate it

Sounds like a good price for those pedals (based on MSRP). The main difference between them and the new Ultegra pedals (which I just recently bought) are those use SPD-R cleats and the new versions take SPD-SL (wider platform, 3 bolt mounting vs. 2). So for shoes, just make sure they can take a SPD-R cleat which from my shoe shopping experience, all of them will. It's almost impossible to recommend a shoe without you having tried them on first. Go to as many different stores as you can and try on all different brands in all different price ranges. I was originally looking to buy some cheap shoes for around $60. I ended up spending $180 (including tax) on a pair of Carnac Comete's b/c they fit so good. Nothing else really came close, though plenty were cheaper. Sidi's were too wide in the heal, Pearl Izumi's didn't hold my feet quite as well, and Nike's just didn't feel quite as nice (and are made in China).

Do make sure that you´ve got the teflon coated SPD-R cleats as there were some problems of disengement in the rain with the original design ( also check for an urgent cleat recall , I saw something about it somewhere but can´t remember where - sorry )

OK , found it : Shimano are recalling cleats SM-SH92 ( SPD-R ) code no : Y-43Y98030 / Y-43Y98031
Ciclismo a Fondo pg 59 , no.223 , 06 / 2004 , see www.shimano-europe.com/cycling
may not be important but a small tang at the rear of the cleat may fail and if it does you can´t disengage the cleat - but only cleats with these serial numbers .
