Hi all. New here. I just stumpled onto this forum when I was doing a Google for bikes and Iwakuni. Just to introduce myself, I am an avid mtn biker, IMBA member and on staff of my local bike club SORBA. I race mtn bikes (24 hour races and beginner local series) and ride on the road for training. I have a Specialized Rockhopper hardtail with really nice components I plan to put on a Blur or Spider soon. I also have a 1999 Lemond Zurich.

OK, now that you know all about me I have a question. I am just getting my Dad into riding and I'll be darned if he's not moving to Japan. He just accepted a job in Iwakuni and will be living on base. I noticed a few of you have been there. He really needs a new bike but doesn't want to buy one here and ship it, he would rather buy one there. Is there any place there to buy a good bike? I am hoping for him to get a hybrid of some sort. He needs the mtn bike design for comfort but it should be a hardtail and have slick tires. Any help would be appreciated

I haven't lived there in 13 years but back then there were shops with pretty nice mountain bikes so i would assume they are available now. He will have to find a speciality shop as most bike shops there are devoted to transportation bikes as opposed to Mountain or road bikes as we know them. That's my two cents, hopefully someone who has lived there a little more recently will have some input!

Nothing really of note to add, but wanted to bump this thread for search purposes.

Just tossing a post to this thread to let anyone who does a search for Iwakuni, Japan on our beloved forums know that there are resources still available here. There's little enough information out there, but cycling here in Iwakuni, Japan is still active and we've got a group of 5-10 cyclists that actively ride.

I can't imagine ANYTHING in Japan being cheaper than in America; i would buy your bike here and ship it with you. The small bike shop on base (When I was there...yes, also many years ago) was quaint and helpful, but not much else.

Great riding in the area, especially if you go northwest up the Nishiki (?) river and get away from the city. COuntryside opens right up and there are some great climbs. Nice during cherry blossom season, as well....

Enjoy.
