What is the best motor (seems like hub motors work well but I am completely open to any suggestion) that you could possibly think of for a bike? No budget restrictions (well maybe a limit of 1000 to 2000 for the motor)

Right now I think that efficiency and weight are more important than power- this is for a Solar Bike. Our team is probably going to switch over to lithium-ion batteries and I think new motors are in order.

Currently we are using 7-8yr old Heinzmanns and some nice lead acid (they are nice, but theyre still freakin' heavy!) batteries.

The goal now is weight- since we race these things, and depending on fundraising we have a huge budget, I think we can get a 25-30lb (maybe lighter!!!) Solar Bicycle

I can't seem to find any really high end hub motors though.... any thoughts???
Thank you!

The current crop of direct driven, brushless 500W hub motors is a LEAP beyond what we've seen in the past. Everything from design to manufacturing tolerances, to things like efficiency and weight (important on ANY eBike, but especially a project like yours!) has improved by a wide margin. Look for things like a high magnetic pole count (and physically wider magnets), high quality castings, forged axles, etc.

Should be EASY to obliterate your old Heinzmanns (which were great in their day), and I don't think it will eat into your budget as much as you might expect. . .
