Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Big Apples for my Steamroller

What size Schwalbe Big Apples will fit on my Surly Steamroller? I saw a Karate Monkey with the 2.35s and it was awesome! I am running both front and rear brakes it that makes a difference.

Well, according to Surly, the Steamroller's tire clearance is for a 700x38 (http://www.surlybikes.com/steamroller.html) so I assume that none of the Big Apple tires would fit. Big Apples come in 50mm or 60mm widths.

Of course, you could have found out all this with a single Google search. But OK...

I figured that I must be wrong because of the FFF advertising. 38mm is not much wider than the stock tires! Thanks for the help anyway.

Yea dude I have 2.3 BA's on my 29er; they're like a slightly less burly, 29" hookworm; I have seen a fixed build around here or maybe on velospace where a guy put on some big apples, but I think it was a cx frame.

I run a Steamroller with 38c's and a fender cut back from the seat tube. You might be able to squeeze 42c's in there. The chain stays will certainly permit it. There's not much room left over with 38c's. But, if you run slicks who knows - 45c might be the limit before you start rubbing up against the seat tube. Your frame/paint will pay a serious price in road grit damage. I think the cheapest homebrew fix to that is to cut down an old road tire and tape a piece to the back of the seat tube with electrical tape. Worked for me for awhile until I found an old, aluminum chain stay guard and put that back there.

it's true that tire sizes are measured without regard to tread, so slicks will be "smaller" than huge knobbies in terms of clearance, but i doubt you are gonna fit big apples on a steamroller, that's what the karate monkey is for...

Now there's an ingenious solution - hats off. Do you perchance remember whether they were 50mm or 60mm wide big apples? That would be 2" and 2.35" respectively.

You can get Marathon Supremes fairly wide too... not as wide as big apples... but still enough to soak some bumps.

I find kend 38c holiday rollers at 55~65 to be cushy
