Professional Cycling For the Fans - Out of the saddle

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Does Contador always climb out of the saddle when climbing? He seemed never to be on the saddle today.

I think that's mostly a matter of style/preference, some riders never go out of the saddle, some always do - whatever you're more comfortable with.

yes. when he was young, his coach put tacks in his saddle, which trained him to never sit on it.
the only reason why he still has one, is because saddles are mandatory on road bicycles by the UCI.

I thought he was just showing off... or he's got a nasty wedgie

What IS wrong with you? Is this supposed to be humorous? You sure are a WUM on the loose.

If I weighed 137lbs I'd climb out of the saddle all day as well.

It's actually a true story. No sarcasm at all.
Man, you guys suck - it's not nice at all to make fun of a guy who has the Saddle Sores of Death. You try riding sitting down with sores like that. 'T'ain't funny.

i couldn't be more serious.
Riding out of the saddle uses different muscle groups than powering the pedals around seated. It is conceivable he was doing his best to conserve what he'll need tomorrow in the flat time-trial.

which is precisely why contador's coach had him train on a saddle with tacks.

I'm just glad I never had a Spanish trainer...
Man, in one shot today the Schleck brothers were powering hard up little hill close to the finish. They were both out of the saddle turning over - oh I dunno - 70rpm? Contador was out of the saddle and must have been turning over 90+. They sat down over the top of the hill and Contador just kept bouncin' like a carnival ride gone mad for a few seconds. That's phenomenal - my cadence has to go way down when I get out of the saddle.

Contador reminds me of how Pantani used to climb out of the saddle.

I think of this for some reason when I see him riding out of the saddle.

With all due respect... I'd have to call BS on this one.

Botto is full of rubbish, to be honest. He goes around posting weird and random wind-ups all over the forum.

I wouldn't say "full". He seems like a pretty knowledgeable cat when it come to cycling. He just has a different kind of BF humor...
