Hi y'all,
I began riding during my first year away at school ('82) and I bought my first good bike in '84; a Peugeot UO-14 from Cumberland Transit in Nashville. I racked up a lot of miles in Davidson and Williamson Counties in TN.
I dropped riding for a while when I moved to Huntsville, AL in '86, but a friend got me back into to it in the early '90s. I rode a bit with the Spring City Cycling Club during that period. I've only been on the bike for brief periods in this decade; preferring to concentrate on my job and being a musician.
I recently decided to get back into cycling. I decided to retire the antique Peugeot in favor of a modern ride, so I bought a Motobecane Sprint from BikesDirect. Holy cow! What a huge difference 25 years has made in bicycle development. I'm loving these modern drivetrains!
After only one month back on the bike, I feel like I'm riding better than ever with two exceptions. First, at 23 years old, I used to tear up the hills of middle TN while barely noticing the change in terrain. At 45, I'm finding lesser hills to be quite a challenge. Second, I'm having to pay much more attention to my body. In my 20s, I just hopped on the bike and rode with a little water here and there. At 45, I need to pump sugar and water into my body well before I think about riding as well as during. I do find it facinating to explore the limits of my fat, old body. :)
Enough rambling. I'm happy to have found this site and I'm hoping to learn from others here. I'm also hoping to find a few replacement parts for that old Peugeot.
