I am thinking about this

After the KOM challenge...

- Descend back down South Gate to pickup food/tools/etc
- Back up South Gate to the junction
- Down North Gate (hey we already went to the summit!)
- Over through Clayton to Morgan Territory
- Up Morgan Territory
- Down the Plunge
- (Optional Altamont and Patterson Pass.. depending on how we are doing)
- Back to Danville, via the flats (Tassajara, etc...)

You like Diablo repeats, don't you? If I have the legs, I was thinking of just Clayton - Morgan Territory, then back.

I just posted something in the KOM thread about a post KOM ride right now.

I like the look of yours also.

Here's the short option (including the KOM race):
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Post-KOM-challenge-short-rt
76miles, 8200 ft

Here's the long option (also including the KOM race):

113miles, 9600 ft

I'd rather enjoy a nice ride up to the junction and descend NG, than ride through a bunch of surface streets to get to Clayton.

I hate the Clayton/YG Valley Rd part enough, as it is

I doubt my ability to survive the long route. 88f means that it will only be 100 in those intermediate valleys. Still too hot for 2 bottles. Eugh, I'm scared of the heat now. Last week was so miserable.

Keep the Camelback in the car. We are going back to the cars.

The short route is a much better option for myself. I might even take out climbing to the Junction in the end and rode Iron Horse Trail back. I am not sure if my legs will be up for that much climbing. Never done that much before in a day and will be less fun in the heat.

OK.. the Long Route seems a little ambitious, especially after a max effort.

I still want to do the 1/2 Diablo after descending SG though. Ruthie and I need the training for Tam Double. We have not had much bike time the past 2 months.

I'm most likely out for anything long since it's a long enough haul just to get home. I would be up for post-climb food though

I'll probably go back to my car, grab some food & water, then go up to the junction, down the north gate road to the north gate, then climb it again from there.

I have never really eaten in Danville before, so I am just looking through what seems to be the downtown area on google maps. If a majority of the people that are going on the extended ride don't want to stop for lunch right at that point, I will not be stopping either.

Here are a couple places that would work both for lower cost and likely halfway decent food. Please give suggestions if you have them.

Rising Loafer (http://www.danvillerisingloafer.com/)
Subway
Chipotle
Norm's Place (http://normsgrill.com/)
Quizno's
La Ultima New Mexican Food (http://www.laultimadining.com/)

Of the ones I listed, my vote will either be for Rising Loafer or La Ultima.

This is a good idea. Unfortunately for me, I probably wouldn't have time for the Morgan Territory as we'll only hit the summit at 10:30, but will do something like Eric and perhaps a repeat climb, although I'm tempted to go down North Gate and climb back up NG to summit before heading back down to Athenian.

:thumb::thumb: for Norm's Place, but it's really best for a post or "almost-post" ride as the service is a bit leisurely and the portions are plentiful.

A faster alternative, but still great food is Domenico's Deli (http://domenicosdeli.com/)

Sheesh, I mention a nice cooldown ride back to the start via North Gate, and we end up with mountain repeats, Morgan Territory, and double metrics!

Don't worry, if you lead a "short route" return, I for one will make sure you are not alone!

I would like to throw in the half Diablo after Morgan, but I will have to play it by ear (and a bit of peer pressure never hurts :) ).

I'm gonna have to go with the faster alternative here since I want to do go through Morgan Territory later in the day.

Thanks to everyone who went on the post ride. That had to be one of the hardest rides I had ever been on, but it was worth every mile. (by the way, I am hurting today).

I had a lot of fun on it. Everyone was a good sport and not in a rush. I had a lot of fun chatting and riding with everyone.

From the top of Diablo, I tried to get a head start on everyone because I knew I would be slow on riding back to the junction, but my derailleur/chain decided to not cooperate and the chain came off 3 times just on the downhill back to the cars. I then met up with everyone, turned back around and made my way back up to the junction. I ended up riding with a couple Leukemia/Lymphoma riders and talked with them for a bit. They were training for the Utah century. Also, they said they were going to ride on the peninsula next weekend, so I will probably see them there. I ended up trudging along all the way to Morgan Territory. Everything went pretty well for me until I got part of the way up Morgan Territory, then by body told me that it was not all that happy. I slowly made my way up to the top, stopping twice to rest. I was amazingly happy to find what little shade there was and rest my legs.

After the rest, we all flew down the aptly named 'plunge.' Nice, fast, and smooth. After that point, we all went our own paces back to the car and on our way homes. I accidentally added about 4-5 miles to ride in the end. Instead of taking Blackhawk road to Athenian school, I too the Camino all the way to Diablo Road. Oh well, it was mostly all flat.

Here is the only picture I apparently took while on this part of the ride, though I thought I took more.

The only spot of shade around.

kyle - you did really well. Keep it up and the Davis Double will come easy. :thumb:

It was fun riding with you all. My legs are feeling it today. :)

Thanks for posting the picture, Kyle, the image of the group crowding in the only available sliver of shade pretty much captures the afternoon. It wasn't the hottest day temperature-wise, but the Sun was unrelenting, especially on the shadeless haul back where it was all I could do just to keep the cranks turning over. I went through 2.5 camelbaks of water and a handful of bottles, but still felt cramps starting to come on towards the end. One of these days I'll figure out how to keep myself properly hydrated in warm weather!

In any event, it was great fun meeting up with everyone again (and some of you for the first time). Looking forward to the next time - perhaps on the cooler side of the Bay :thumb:
