Bicycle Mechanics - removing the crank arm

Hi,
Is the crank arm puller device mandatory to remove the crank arm? Seems like all the instructions and youtube videos use that device. Where can I get one of these apart from a bike store? Or is there an alternative?

Yes, a crank arm extractor is mandatory if you want to reuse the crankarm. You can buy extractors from LBS or online and are a very common item. Make sure you get the right extractor for the crank interface: square taper, ISIS, Octalink...

Here is an example of one for $7, that works on the above three crank arm types. It's not "shop quality" or bears a fancy name, but seems to be perfect for the weekend mechanic.:

I'm assuming you have a square taper? The Park CWP-7C can handle square and splined (although some splined have a self extracting crank bolt.

I wouldn't have a clue as to what type of crankset. This is for a 07 Norco Mountaineer and a 06 Trek 820. :(

Hard to tell even from the descriptions from the manufacturers. But a Park Tool CWP-7 would handle it. One says a tapered 115mm would fit, but it looks like a cartridge-bearing. No matter - CWP-7 will get it opened.

OK I did some research. I think they are square tapered. Both uses the Suntour XCC-series crankset. Which according to the suntour website is compatible with square BB.
