From what I understand or read somewhere, Radio Shack is looking to fill the void left by Circuit City to become a competitor to Best Buy. Right now when one thinks of Radio Shack they think of a small shop to buy your resistors, solder, soldering iron, cable, miscellaneous electronic parts, etc. I think this is part of their re-branding their image.

RadioShack is fine.

I think you need a sail and a keel to get Oracle's attention.

And a bunch of New York State Attorneys. Cycling probably can't gobble up enough cash to keep Larry interested. He could just buy the whole sport. What challenge would that represent?

RadioShack = RadioSuck

Not the best image, they sell rebadged stuff, and are overprice.
I don't have a clue why people go to RadioShack.

I would rather see Target or Trader Joes

I'm just glad to see another of America's greatest cyclists, to date, hooking up with an American business as one of the primary sponsors. Am very curious as to who will be on the team? Hope to see Popo, Levi, Kloden, Horner and even Contador on the team. Although, I do hope Contador learns to be a much better team mate as well as a winner and leader of the team!

Name another retailer where I can find "electrical components" in stores located in smaller communities. I don't love Radioshack, but, can't count the number of times a project has been saved by one. As far as sponsors in cycling go, what difference does the name make as long as it doesn't come with stipulations about who can and can't ride for the team?

Nike and Trek will be sponsors too....Radio Shack is just the major sponsor. I mean I'm from Canada what the hell is a Chipotle/Agritubel/Katusha/Astana anyway? Who cares who sponsors? I'm not too worried. As long as Lance is riding somewhere I'm fine with that.

Just had a "well, duh" moment: Tandy Corp/Radio Shack is HQ'd in Dallas-Ft. Worth - bet that was a factor in their sponsoring Lance.

Also heard Lance in tonight's interviews mention that Radio Shack's exclusive in-store charity will be Livestrong.

Who cares. Is a gas company cool? How about a steel company? It doesn't apply anymore, but how about a pregnancy predictor kit?

Good Lord little *****es.

So will Radio Shack be selling bike computers now. I have a love/hate relationship with Radio Shack. But they do serve a market nitch. And can probably run a low key marketing campaign using Livestrong and pro cycling that will not be too sensitive to doping problems. The name is not too cool but that doesn't seem to matter in pro cycling.

I don't see how they can compete with Best Buy except in the cell phone market. But some people will always prefer going into a smaller store to get personalized help and some things that you can't get at Best Buy.

I'm happy RadioShack stepped up to sponsor a pro cycling team.

I can't imagine why that would bother someone.

I used to work for a smaller company that Radioshack bought out, then sold off 3 years later for 1/10 of what they paid because of their mis-management of the company.

I have not set foot in a radioshack since. I was 'privy' to some of their corporate workings and I am absolutely amazed that they are still in business, especially with everything being so much cheaper on the internet.

It makes sense Lance would choose a Texas-based company, but I was saddened to see it was radioshack. Perhaps this is a 'last-gasp' type of deal for them to coat-tail the Livestrong movement.

I remember all of the bragging about their corporate headquarters and how impressive it was. I find it funny that now they had to sell off a bunch of it.

Maybe someone here has worked for a Radioshack store. If so, I'm sure they'll have all kinds of stories to tell.

You can't say they aren't on top of things when it comes to taking advantage of current trends.

So what's coming, the Lance Armstrong edition power shredder?

Could be worse, the 2010 Walmart Pro Cycling Team! All you haters need to take a time out. Nothing wrong with an american based sponsor on the pro Tour.

Oh, wouldn't that be great for cycling!? And I'm sure they would make the most of it by having appropriately badged bike for sale starting at what $99.99?

I got a cell phone charger at Radio Shack... about 8 years ago. I'm pretty sure that was the last time I've ever been in one and I didn't realize they were doing that well; thought they were going the way of K-Mart, Circuit City, etc.

I don't know about the whole triathlete, blah blah blah, thing. Reminds me of Bo Jackson. ;)

When we heard that it was going to be a Texas based sponsor, we were trying to think of the worst possible sponsors. Imagine: "Team Haliburton"

Thank you Merlin...for both posts... yes FCF is great for RHS (http://finance.yahoo.com/q?d=t&s=RSH) - I was gritting my teeth until I saw your posts.

That's why you want to focus on cash. The $157million free cash flow is the most significant number. You can't fake cash easily.

Hooters FTW

lol! Imagine the jerseys!

Don't imagine the shorts - it would be like a whole team of BikerFoxes! :twitchy:

On a different note, there was a local racing team that had Hooters as a co-sponsor. The women on the team were not amused at having the Hooters logo on the left side of the shorts, near passing traffic. At least it wasn't on the back of the shorts, which is an area that probably gets even more attention.

Ugh, Team Radio Shack just doesn't roll out like a Team Oracle or Team Nike. It has too many syllables to say after a few drinks. Oh well, they got to spend their money somewhere. It's surely not in their stores. They're mostly empty these days.

they are junk stores around here. i'm surprised they are still in business. if they are trying to go heads up with best buy they have their work cut out for them.

You have it backwards.
You can't look at the Fortune 500 list and pick which ones would make a good sponsor.
What makes a good sponsor is whether or not they write you a check.

The sponsors drive the sport. We usually don't get to pick who we want on our kit.
If Radio Shack wants in, are you going to say, "no, we want Oracle"?

This really is the answer.

And not every team can be fortunate enough to have Bold City Brewery as a sponsor.
