I just hope they stick around a while, as in more than 4 or 5 years.

I have not read anything official about that yet, but you can bet your pants they will be.

Wow. I would have expected Trek, Nike, or Coca-Cola. Not Radio Shack.

Garthr

Coca-cola is as conservative as a corp. could get, and cycling would be way too risky for them in these times of riders getting caught for cheating. They wouldn't risk a tarnished image.

I don't think Trek or Nike has the assets of Tandy Corporation, the parent of RS.

I'm betting Trek bikes, Castelli or Nike kits, SRAM components, SRM, Radio Shack radios???....

Kits will probably be red (Radio Shack) and yellow (Livestrong) with black (Mellow Johney's) trim...yuck.

Nike is a lot bigger than Tandy, trust me. But I don't think they're too keen on the cycling market.

Also, in cycling, the technology we use on our bikes matters - it allows us to compete at the highest level. It's important to me to partner with a brand that understands the role technology plays in people's lives.

Err, isn't this a reason not to go with RadioShack?

I was just in Radio Shack the other day... Glad to see a big time sponsor that I can support.

I do have a Garmin GPS, and at least one Columbia Sportswear jacket... but Radio Shack I seem to go to more often for smaller things.

It should be good for American cycling.

Seems odd. Look what Nike did on the back of Tiger Woods in golf. They came from no where to be a big time seller of all sorts of equipment and apparel.

I wouldn't be surprised if most of the Astana team would go, if asked.

Contador is an interesting question. He has all the instincts of a lone (and hungry!) wolf, but I get the distinct impression that the "team" thing finally hit home yesterday when he unnecessarily destroyed Kloden. If his Spanish ego doesn't get in the way of his brain, he will want to stay with Johan (and Lance) and learn. He's a great talent, but he's far from a great stage racer.

I think the real question is whether the new team will want him back. :innocent:

lance a Runner and Triathlete too?

"RadioShack Corporation will form an American ProTour team, and, beginning next year, Lance Armstrong will compete for Team RadioShack "as a cyclist, runner and triathlete," the company announced in a press release." Right.

Because the best rider in the world should be concerned with potential podium finishes of (what should be) his domestiques--and not the other way around.

Contador is in first.

Astana is in first.

Why is there any controversy at all?

DMF
07-23-09, 01:21 PM
Me me me. I wouldn't want to be on your team. A good leader tries to get the best for his team.

Ask any of e.g. Lance's former teammates. They will tell you that a big reason they were willing to work so hard for him is that they knew he would do his best for them. Don't ask your team to work when it isn't important. Don't take away a teammate's time and sliver of glory.

It doesn't seem hard, but it goes against the instinct of some competitors.

Funny, Coca-cola actually had cocaine in it at one point way back in the nineteenth century. I think that's tarnished enough.

I think Contador would be a fool to be near Dopeakourov. If the ASO holds true to form, Vino won't be anywhere near the TdF next year. And if Alberto's on that team, he'll get to watch the TdF on VS.

I did. But I'm surprised because he hasn't been that active in the swimming leg recently. And seriously, he can do marathons during retirement, but as an active cyclist?

Come on people. Lance wasn't a good tour racer before (didn't finish the tour??) becuase his build was wrong for it (built like a triathlete) until the chemotherapy which decomposed significant amounts of his muscle tissue, so that when he went into remission and began building muscle again it was as a cyclist with a cycling build and less upper body strength and adored leg muscles specific to a full cycling regime.

To my knowledge he hasn't done a serious tri since then. That part of the announcement in light of that knowledge suprised me the most

Contador's contract is with Bruyneel however, not Astana. Through the 2010 season. He could be bought out, but imagine the price just to do that. . . and who'd be willing to pay that, and his salary?

I can think of few teams good enough to support him other than a Bruyneel(JB) team, Saxo bank being one, but they have Andy Schleck. Caisse de P ? Maybe, but even they pale in comparison to the other two in horsepower of a 9 man team.

Who knows what's going on with AC and if his ego was hurt, and weather he can get past it to stay with JB long term? One thing for sure though, JB's teams give him the best opportunity to win more TDF's.

The Team kits? I have a feeling they will be like most kits these days . . horrendous:lol:

Wiki definition of SuperFred:

"The term 'SuperFred' Coined by DenisMenchov....a SuperFred is someone who looks like a cat 5 dork poser, but actually wins Grand Tours." :(

http://yomania.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/12/beegt.gif

So this will be the team's official yo-yo?

You know, the current version of this Playmaxx/Proyo Turbo Bumble Bee GT is marketed by Duncan, as the DragonFly model. Duncan's a division of Flambeau, an American company. And yo-yos and bicycles sort of go together, I suppose. So maybe it's not as outlandish an idea as it sounds. They could do a Tour de France edition of the yo-yo, with graphics showing the pictured bumble bee riding a Trek racing bike.

Looks like TdF 2010 will be more interesting than 2009... top GC competitors:

Contador = Astana or Alonso or other?
Armstrong = Radio Shack
Schleckx2 = Saxo
Evans = Lotto or other?
Wiggins = Garmin
Vinokourov = Astana
Sastre = Cervelo
Menchov = Rabobank
T. Martin = Columbia
Liquigas = Kreuziger

... just to name a few. No more internal politics at Astana. They'll be duking it out in the mountains. :)

Evans has to leave. He'll never win the tour with a team like Lotto.

Contador will not share the limelight with Vonokourov and risk the LA-JB thing all over again.

If his team goes through, he might join other Spanish riders.

If Cav, Hincapie, Leipheimer, Horner, Popovych, LA, Kloden and other lesser riders form a team ... now that's something. Or Zabriskie.

First, Motorola introduces radio communication to the pro peloton.

Now, Radio Shack proudly introduces the first remote control team support car! Bruyneel will be able to watch the race on TV from the comfort of his hotel room, while playing with the joystick in his lap!

(No, I didn't mean that joystick...)

Well I think it's obvious that everyone on Astana right now except Contador will probably wind up on the Radio Shack team. It's just a matter of who else..whoever it is he/she would have to be good at time trials.

rear wheels will be J-disk

Bikes may or may not have the twistable motor cycle sound effect on the right bar
