So I'm already enjoying my new trailer. I pulled it to Lowes this morning to pick up some PVC pipe and fittings then pulled it home to make my newest bike accessory; a trailer mounted white board for offering messages to traffic behind you.

I'm sure some will think this is a cool/good idea and others will say "if cars are reading your signs they aren't watching traffic" and this is a stupid/bad idea. I understand both sides but honestly I don't think it's unsafe because people read various signs and advertisements all the time while driving and they rarely run into the thing they are reading. If anything I hope it will make cars slow down enough to read whatever is written on the board. [I need to work on my hand writing.] The message right now is just a test- I'll probably try to come up with something more upbeat before I start pulling it around.

You're going to catch a lot of air with that -- it's going to really slow you down.

Also, keep your message short and simple, two or three big words, not a bunch of small words. Think about what it's like to try to read a bumper sticker with three lines of text as opposed to a bumper sticker with two words on it.

I pulled it to the store to get beer a little while ago. The wind resistance wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. I can't ride too fast with the trailer anyway so it doesn't really seem to make a huge difference.

Before I rode around I changed the message to read: Bicyclists have more fun than normal people do.

I don't plan to leave the sign on the trailer all the time, just bring it out for special occasions like parades, critical mass/critical manners rides, and other slow/social/just-for-fun rides.

PVC pipe- is there anything it can't do?!

You may want to run a supporting chain or wire to the vertical struts, something like the attached picture.

You'll lose some cargo space, but you'll gain a lot of strength. I don't know how much strain a PVC tee-fitting can take.

Yeah, that'll take care of a lot of the strain from what wind will hit it.

I don't think it cures cancer either; but outside of these two things- it can do anything!

That's pretty cool.

Funny coincidence. I saw a guy today on a fixie hauling a big sign on a large trailer. I said something like: ALLOW THREE FEET When Passing a Bicycle. I took a picture but it didn't come out. :( DC government was paying him to ride around downtown with that! :thumb:

A simple and direct message is better. How about "Don't Kill Me!" ? or "I Have Kids" or "Honk if you're Horny"

You might want to just say how many are killed by cars, not just bicyclists. It's a 9/11 every month on the roads and that is just the ones killed outright.
