Foo - how many of you were never taught how to shave

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
the real reason I don't shave my face very often, my dad never taught me how to shave or care for it.
So I usually just have it done when I cut my hair.
I figured it out on my own.
And like my pops I'm a heretic, I step out of the shower, walk to the sink and shave. No cream, or other stuff, just a razor to the face.

wow. hardcore.
having said that if i am running late (what am i talking about - i mean really really later than usual), I'll grab my wife's razor in the shower and hack the bulk of wet beard off my face....
oh, and no one ever taught me either. I recently went back to a DE razor, what I started out on, at 12!

It is hardcore if you shave dry before you shower.
No one taught me either. It is not the most complicated thing.
No one taught me. I just shave with water before I shower. That way I can watch all the blood swirl down the drain.

I can't remember if my dad taught me or not, but I don't recall ever having any trouble shaving. Warm water, rub the shaving cream in thoroughly to raise the hairs as much as possible (a shaving brush seems to help do this for me), shave with the grain, then across the grain, then against the grain if I'm feeling boisterous. Then rinse with cold water and apply aftershave.

I'm about the same way, never used shaving cream, don't plan to. I rarely even have moist skin when I shave, because I got into the nasty habit of shaving on the way to work as an abatement worker. While doing abatement, I'd shower twice at work, and once right before bed, and I'd have to shave in the morning in case the state was out, so that I couldn't get fined. So I've long been in the habit of dry as dry gets shaving. I don't see a need for anything more.
I figured out how to shave thanks to Malistryx's excellent photo-tutorial on leg shaving. Before that, it was always an electric razor.
My dad taught me how to shave but with a Mach3 razor. I had to teach myself how to shave with a straight blade. Much better shave btw.

Awe, heck! I just pluck the varmints out one hair at a time with needle nose pliers. Don't have to do it again until the swelling goes down.

no women ahve replied....unless i missed the posts...no one showed me...of course we're talking legs not faces. :) it's pretty dang simple.
oh yea, in the shower, every other day (just soap). or every day (still soap) depending on whether i might be seeing Airwick or not. :D and, if i get lazy, and go more than 2 or 3 days  i like to use shaving gel.

No one taught me how to shave myself. I just figured it out on my own...after much clumsiness and some razor cuts in some rather...uh...odd locations. *winces* I shave when I'm lazy, wax or use depilatory creams when I'm not.
I was, however, taught how to shave men's faces by an ex of mine. I asked because I was curious, and he was trusting enough to let me take a razor to his face and neck. I am glad to say I only cut him once. :D

Nobody taught me to shave, I'm a girl.
I usually use body wash/whatever on legs, underarms and the rare time I shave "down there." I HATE shaving down there. Even if I go with the hair growth direction, I itch the next day, Not polite to scratch there in public, yanno.
I'd get it waxed professionally (did that with a home kit in the past, OUCH!) but $ is a prob right now.
Hmmmm
Hand, shaver.
Shaver, leg, ... ankle ....

Not that close to ankle ....
Bleed, bandaid and remember not to do that again - slices sections off!
shower, get out, lather face, let lather sit a minute or two. shave with multi blade razor. long strokes with firm even pressure. rinse razor after each stroke in warm water. after shaving, use hair dryer to dry razor blade and it stays sharper, longer.
My dad showed me how to shave when I was 14 or so. I tried it for awhile, said screw this! and immediately grew a beard.

Yep, the hair gets softened in the shower and just water is enough lubricant to shave w/o nicks.
I rinse the razor after a few strokes to keep things wet and to keep the razor from packing up.
This is all despite the education afforded by Dr. Demento.
YouTube - Shaving Cream - Dr. Demento
i know how, but for the life of my skin I have to use a single blade razor.
the best shaves I have ever gotten were from women with hot lather and a straight blade.
If I am doing it myself I use a electric razor.

My barber cut it today.
this is why they follow me around the bike shop.
I figured it out on my own, through a regimen of trial & error (and blood, don't forget the blood!), then quickly learned to hate it. The Mach 3 is one of the most hideous torture devices ever devised.
Oh, to never have to shave ever again.

Dang, if I shaved completely dry I would end up with a blood bath on my hands. :twitchy: Sometimes I have to re-lather just before going back over a spot.

Cold water is the trick, I learned that after years of not shaving everyday because I'd breakout. After shaving with cold water my skin doesn't even get red. The blades stay sharper longer amazingly enough. If I haven't shaved in a while I use one of my wife's 5blade ladies' razors on the rough stuff as it works better than mine on the turf, then finish with mine for the tight spots like right under my nose. I thought the 5 blade would be a torture device but I've found that it spreads the tension over the skin better, so less chance of me doing myself damage.... save that for the road.
I guess my learning to shave was watching my Dad do it as a child.

I opened this thread to figure out if we were talking legs or faces.... I'm still not sure.
Face
Never taught, just figured it out with a Mach3... never used anything else.
My technique was confirmed as proper on the once hit show "queer eye for the straight guy"... girlfriend's family liked to watch it.
Lather up, shave with hair direction (to get most), go back over shaving against hair direction (to get close).
Always warm water (never tried cold... guess I could).
If I'm not fresh out of a decent length warm shower and still dripping when I lather... I'll get sliced and diced.
Legs
Still not taught... but the closest I've come is shaving them with concrete. I don't suggest it.

I've tried this and it doesn't seem to work for me...
I just bumped up to the mach 3 blades, only because the older gillette blades were getting tough to find.
How often do people shave? I rarely, if ever shave two days in a row, usually every 3-4 days. I dont' know how the people I work with do it.
for legs, the wax works and nice not to have to shave every day or other day...and for me at least it really doesn't hurt that much; ymmv, i guess.
I do like the Mach 3 for shaving legs. Prefer the double edge safety razor for face. Right now I am using a vintage ladies' Gillette....exactly like the men's for light beards, only it has a longer handle - and pretty baby blue stars on it!:D
interesting hair dryer trick....I forgot to mention - I am with the lather brush crowd, and i use oil first (wash face or shower > shaving oil > brush and cream lather > shave > after shave balm in winter, old school barbershop alcohol crap in hot months.

meh...don't bother with the back of my thighs cause the hair is so light, you can't see it unless the sun is jsut right and you're looking.

This is true folks. When I met Hillary, the **** had an ugly foo man chu going on. So I broke out the Epilady and showed Hillary how to shave. He resisted at first but once the chloroform kicked in it was easy sailing. Poor Hillary, when he woke up our boss at Hardees, Rick Greene, wrote him up for sleeping at the fryer vat. Memories!

Due to sensitive skin, I changed my habits last year, picking up a brush, good cream, and a new razor.
Merkur 38c Double Edge razor. About $.15 per blade. Not only does it give you a better shave, but the amount of money you save with these blades, versus cartridges is amazing. There's a couple of forums dedicated to shaving that will teach you more than what your daddy has ever taught you!

My dad never taught me either. I had to learn on my own....the hard way.
I just jammed shaving cream on my face and started shaving. I nearly always got face rash and cuts due to my sensitive skin. It was a few years later a cousin of mine saw me shaving and said, "you shave without wetting and soaping up your face first? Wow...hardcore". Then I learned that secret and it got much better.
I still get occasional cuts or raspberries, but not nearly as much as I used to. I usually just do a quick electric shaver during the week. They don't shave very close, but they're quick and effective for a "good enough" shave on work days.

Shaving nowadays is really not that difficult. I used to own a straight razor, and keeping up with all the sharpening and stuff can be a headache. No wonder everyone used to have beards. I would actually have a long dwarf beard if:
1. People would still hire me.
2. Women would still speak to me.
I'm not allowed a beard at work, anyway.
So I guess ****** is NatL Asso. of Manly Beard Loving Anarchists?
