Professional Cycling For the Fans - What's with Lance's TT bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ok I watched the Stage 19 TT, and the bike lance is riding is not a normal Equinox TTX, the front looks more like a felt DA than a trek. Does anyone know what this new bike is?

i know his bike was yellow which i thought was either the height of arrogance or just plain ole wishful thinking.

It's Trek's new TT bike. Here's another one that Lance rode in stage 1:

I think it's more of a Livestrong thing. Before the tour started, he said his reason for riding again was to promote Livestrong. Obviously, mid tour he changed his tune and said he was there to win.
Whether that's the truth or not is up to you to decide...

It's not the maillot jaune color; it's the Livestrong foundation color.
Lance is also a big investor in Trek.
Wait till the final stage for yet another custom decorated bike.

Someone in the stage18 thread posted links/pictures of the bike; it is a Trek time trial bike, just with a special paint job and wheels.
eta: here's (http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/stages/nara/) the link.
And I heard a guy from Cervelo say on Eurosport that the UCI changed the rules regarding the construction for time trial bikes shortly before the Tour, so all the manufacturers had to scramble to develop equipment for the pros; and the result of that is, that none of the bikes used in the Annecy time trial are actually available in stores.

I like the non-paired spoke wheels. Wonder how the Trek/Bontrager paired spokes limits potential buyers?
that is just one Fugly bike.
there, I said it.

Trek makes water skis? Is Lance gonna wear a leather jacket and a ski belt too?

When his foundation was started he was winning the TdF and yellow meant/means winning the TdF. It makes since that he would adopt that color which means so much about winning when dealing with a disease where winning is the difference between life and death. Now for many its a symbolic color in their attempt to beat cancer.
grow up.

oh puhleez. contador was the 2009 spanish national TT champ. did you see his yellow helmet? he could have rode a yellow bike because he actually earned it...twice!
all that livestrong hogwash is just more of lance's BS arrogance.
the old man thought he would be in yellow. he wasn't. he should have rode a team bike like the rest of the domestiques

I miss the days when the leaders of races didn't feel the need to change their bike, bibs, and helmets to match the jersey.

You mean when they auction the thing off? Somehow I don't think the technical details will be very relevant. Kinda misses the point.........

it really doesn't matter to me but when was the last time you saw a non-leader ride a custom-made yellow bike .... and while his team leader wore the mallet john ?

were you following the tour back then?
Lance Armstrong rides different bikes because he like to see how people react to them. Some hate them, some hate him, some like them, and some even think it's OK what he does.
Heck, it worked for Dale Earnhardt. He was the king of changing ride colors for different occasions. I know this is different sports completely, but Earnhardt was a marketing king. Nothing wrong with taking a page from his playbook.

This thread got really dumb. Whether or not you like Lance there is no denying that he won seven tours (more than anybody remember?) and will always be associated with with the TdF and the color yellow. He is arguably the the most famous and recognizable cyclist there has ever been (notice I didn't say best). He can do what ever the **** he wants because of this. What about Cadel's bike? Tibetan colors for a cause he believes in. Livestrong is the exact same thing. See above for the reasoning behind the yellow.

1989 or so (like many)... yeah, when did LeMond or Fignon bust out a yellow set of bibs to match their yellow bike?
I wish I had my copies of Winning from back in those days to see if the trend had started by then, but IIRC, even in those days the likes of LeMond, Bugno, and Armstrong paired up their leaders jerseys (and WC stripes for that matter) with regular team kit.
Wait.... you're right.... dammit. LeMond had that Giro helmet with the yellow side panels when he won the 1990 Tour.

What is your deal? The guy is third overall, in his first season back at 37. Moreover, he ran his first Marathon last year in 2:50. Do you know how hard it is to run a sub 3-hour marathon? Many dedicated runners never achieve this mark, and Lance did it for fun, with very little training. The guy is an absolute freak of nature.
Yes, the yellow TT bike was an arrogant choice (notwithstanding the Livestrong yellow references), given that he has no hope of yellow. But to call him an over-the-hill poseur?

Naw. I'm a realist. I am surprised at Sastre's performance, to be honest. But I am pleasantly surprised at ol Lance's deal.

sorry if that offends you but lance had alot of people believing he could win the tour when in fact he could not.
can you tell me the last guy to win at 35? how about 34?
to give lance credit he does have supreme confidence in himself -- he is god -- and that has made him the greatest champ the TDF has ever seen.
i just think that while your team mate is in yellow -- and you are not -- maybe you ride a different bike that day? it's not like he doesn't have others to choose from.
naw lance has always put himself above anyone and above the team. i believe he did more harm to astana on the road than good this year. contador didn't
need armstrong to win and i shudder to think what would have happend if lance got yellow first.
also to lance's credit i notice he's alot more relaxed in interviews than he was in previous years but then i read his tweets and the innuendo in his interviews and i can't help but believe he speaks with forked tongue.
ed rader

sastre wasn't a surprise to me. he's been around for years and he had his 15 minutes last year. i will say that when lance first announced his comeback i thought it was a joke and that he'd probably finish mid-pack or DNF.
he's riding much better than i would have thought possible. you know cristophe moreau, who is 38, actually beat armstrong handily yesterday in the TT. i am surprised that doesn't get more mention but maybe in france it does :D.
ed rader
that butterfly bike might be ugly... but its going to be worth more then most of you will make in a lifetime, design by the highest paying artist of our generation damien hirst
