It was an early 90's Diamond Back Topanga I bought brand new for $500. I lent it to a friend. Friend has story; he's buying me a new bike.

She was forest green, about 2" too small for me, seat post at top travel, trek girls bars and panier, and a great seat (no leg interference, lazy-boy comfy). Original bar ends, and matching rear pouch. Nearly 2 decades of 4/1000ths" adjustments everywhere, and perfect. Fully rigid, fast of the road, solid on the trail, and laid back on a boardwalk.

I've been checking the pawns and the police evidence room, but I don't still have the serial number. I also have acess to a nearly identical bike (more original) that's 2" bigger; purchased on the same receipt (my mother's). I need a new work horse.. this bike is my car 6 mo. out of the year, (the rest of the time I'm traveling cross country with the bike in the truck).

I don't know if my mother would part with her's for a reasonable sum, but I have been looking at a Giant Butte (don't tell my fiance or she'd think I was a total buttehole). A mechanic at my local shop has a pretty basic one with new (good enough for now) shifters. It's HARD to find a rigid fork mountain bike here, should go with Old Faithful's older, more pampered sister, or try out a Butte that's seen some action? Both would need the same modifications: rear rack, a pouch, "pimp-er" seat, and taller, more swept bars (the other Topanga has bar ends). The Giant is 150$ plus work, The Diamond Back would cost as much as a replacement for it.

I need your help; should I look at anything else? I've broken plenty of Huffys/Murrays to know I need a solid mtn frame, and I need a rigid fork (I tried the lock-out shocks; no bueno). What am I working with here? Thanks!

No advice? Nobody trying to pawn off an old bike on me? I gotta say, I'm a little disappointed. I think I'm going with the Giant tomorrow. My mother's bike isn't going anywhere. What sucks is I had a flat and no cash, so I swapped rear wheels with her. My tires were substatially more worn than hers, so I have to buy her a set of tires. My father will be a tad agitated if I cheap out on some Wal-marts, but she won't feel anyh difference. It's not like she's ever going to wear them out. So I guess I need tire advice now. I need a tread that looks mean enough, but with a nice center ridge to ride on around town, and on the cheap. Maybe something that looks good with forest or gold (just for icing on the cake). Thanks again.

You could be in the wrong forums, try the "General" forums.

We do not sell old bkes in this forum, try Craglist, E-bay, pawn shops, yard sales and so on.

Seriousely, you swapped rear wheels becouse of a flat and newre sorted it out? You deserve what you got young man, I`d kick your butt, twice! This has got nothing to do with money. You patch the old tube (since you did not keep a spare one) when you have a flat, you do not run to your mother for a cheap solution :mad:

There is no cheap solution for you. Cheap tires rot fast, so if you go the cheap way they are going to be unridable in just a few years. Good tires last and last.

You can buy online or locally. Again I think try another forum, or search the forums. There is quite a lot of tire discussions in the forums so if you put a little work into it you can find good advice for tires out there. Also telling what she had on her bike (size/make) would help.
