It was an early 90's Diamond Back Topanga I bought brand new for $500. I lent it to a friend. Friend has story; he's buying me a new bike.
She was forest green, about 2" too small for me, seat post at top travel, trek girls bars and panier, and a great seat (no leg interference, lazy-boy comfy). Original bar ends, and matching rear pouch. Nearly 2 decades of 4/1000ths" adjustments everywhere, and perfect. Fully rigid, fast of the road, solid on the trail, and laid back on a boardwalk.
I've been checking the pawns and the police evidence room, but I don't still have the serial number. I also have acess to a nearly identical bike (more original) that's 2" bigger; purchased on the same receipt (my mother's). I need a new work horse.. this bike is my car 6 mo. out of the year, (the rest of the time I'm traveling cross country with the bike in the truck).
I don't know if my mother would part with her's for a reasonable sum, but I have been looking at a Giant Butte (don't tell my fiance or she'd think I was a total buttehole). A mechanic at my local shop has a pretty basic one with new (good enough for now) shifters. It's HARD to find a rigid fork mountain bike here, should go with Old Faithful's older, more pampered sister, or try out a Butte that's seen some action? Both would need the same modifications: rear rack, a pouch, "pimp-er" seat, and taller, more swept bars (the other Topanga has bar ends). The Giant is 150$ plus work, The Diamond Back would cost as much as a replacement for it.
I need your help; should I look at anything else? I've broken plenty of Huffys/Murrays to know I need a solid mtn frame, and I need a rigid fork (I tried the lock-out shocks; no bueno). What am I working with here? Thanks!
