Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - chain width

Is it better to go with a 1/8 or 3/32 chain? The only singlespeed specific chain I've found is the sram pc-1. It's 1/8 but it seems most freewheels and cogs are 3/32. Where is a good place to get freewheels and cogs as well? Thanks.

You can use a 1/8" chain with 3/32" chainwheels, freewheels and cogs. I do it all the time. You just can't do the reverse. As far as chains go, KMC makes a good line of SS chains. I prefer the 410 Rustbuster version. Good price, does the job and stays rust free for the mud and stream crossings on my MTB.

i dont think so.There's no reason not to. I've been doing it on 4 bikes, both single and fixed, for many years without any problems. Gives me flexibility to run either 3/32 or 1/8 components.

3/16 chain is always nice too :D

i saw a courier in boston the other day with the big thick chain, it looked kinda cool, and you really wouldnt have to worry about it breaking either

I run 1/8 on all my bikes, and haven't had any problems. I think all except one of my chainrings are 3/32 and all of my track cogs are 1/8. If it wasn't for the versitility of 1/8 chains I would need to get all new chainrings. I even last week transformed my chainwhip into a 1/8 version by replacing the stock chain with a scrap I had lying around. Now I can tighten my cogs without going using an old piece of chain, like I was doing before. I would agree with riderx about the rustbuster chain, although it just looks like the links were sprayed with rustoleum (sp).

P.S. I got a 3/16 chain the otherday, looks kick @ss still haven't put int into play though.

I like the 1/8" stuff... But track chains are better, thicker and uh... solider... I just got one of the same chains that Goatmeal did, and had to take a file to my chain tool to be able to put it together without a master link. Used the leftover chain as a bracelet using the master link to keep it together...

I also had a lower end cog that got completely worn out by putting the really thick chain on it - wore out in about 3 months to where you look at it and the teeth are totally swept in one direction...

Oh, and lose the freewheel - fixed is the only way to be.
