Bicycle Mechanics - KMC Missing link
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have a "new for me" Lemond that came with a KMC 10S Missing link. This is the first removable link I have had on a chain. Do they work? Do you need a special tool like Parks MLP-1 ? http://www.parktool.com/products/detail.asp?cat=5&item=MLP-1
Is it a single-use link? I have seen conflicting info on if its single use or not. How many times can you take it off before it gets to loose?

The Park Tool works quite well, but you can get the link apart with needle nosed pliers if the nose of them will fit inside the links. I have also had fair luck getting these links apart just by pushing the chain backwards across the link also.
Some of these links the packaging will say single use, but I have had mine apart on my MTB 4-5 times for cleaning the chain with no issues. I DO USE A NEW ONE WITH EACH NEW CHAIN. But I also keep the quick link and put it in my parts bag for emergency road/off-road repairs.
The ones that say single-use mean it. Don't re-use them They really aren't "quick links" as is commonly understood.
lbear, you don't need a special tool, but having one makes it easier. You can do it with your fingers once you figure out how. KMC brand is just fine.
