A quick way to find some of the good local routes is to steal ride ideas from organized rides.

Go out and google the routes for the "Chuckanut Century" or the "Skagit Spring Classic" or "Tour de Whatcom;" they will give you some ideas for nice routes in the area. Chuckanut and Skagit Spring Classic are mainly south and southeast of Bellingham; Tour de Whatcome goes all the way north to the Canadian border.

Also, if you like to climb, ride up to Artists Point on Mt. Baker.

These folks (http://www.mtbakerbikeclub.org/) would probably welcome other riders on their weekly rides.

Chuckanut Drive is a good one. If you do the upper "lobe" of the Skagit Century, and start out going south on the inland section, you get to finish up northbound on Chuckanut. Going the other way, you will be a bit closer to the water.

Get someone to give you a lift up to Mt. Baker and coast down.

I know you were asking about road rides, but if you are a mountain biker, some of the best trails around are right out your back door at Galbraith Mountain. The guys at Fanatik Bike in Bellingham http://fanatikbike.com/ can hook you up with a bike and directions.

On 08-08 the Seattle Randonneurs are holding their summer series 300k which travels from Bellingham to Glacier, up Mt. Baker, and turns towards Blaine before heading back to Bellingham.

If 300k with a single 25 mile 4100' climb isn't your style, they're also hosting a 100k family/friends ride from Bellingham to Blaine and back.

The rando's courses are paved; although the top of Mt. Baker is rumoured to still be sketchy and need some road clearing from winter debris/damage.

Thanks for the info. Depending on what the family plans, if I am free I will try and make the ride. I just got back from CO. did some long climbs there. Two time veteran of Mt Evans. Where will the ride start from, and what time is the start.

Hope to see you there

Another source of routes for those unfamiliar with our neighborhood is http://www.mapmyride.com/. Search on Bellingham and you'll get lots of ideas. Also be aware that this is chip sealing season and Whatcom County is doing several roads this summer that I often ride. See http://www.bellinghamherald.com/102/story/992948.html and http://www.bellinghamherald.com/102/story/1001619.html. There's nothing worse in my book than hitting fresh chip seal.
