....is that a messer in the loop broke a cabbie's jaw with his ulock. Cabbie was leaning out of his window, and ulock came out of a back pocket, straight uppercut into cabbie's jaw.
OUCH!

Ouch. WTF did the cabbie do? The way you put it, sounds like he didn't really do....anything. I mean, taxies piss me off as much as the next rider, but shît - that's just not cool.
cool. at least some good news after those horror stories lately.

I wouldn't call that good news. Unless something totally horrible was done by this particular cabbie, how can it be justified?
he made 2 mistakes. he stuck his head out and was blocking the road. he wasnt
wearing a helmet although you run a higher risk of suffering head injuries in a car
than on a bike. :)
I dont mean this serious of course but thats the kind of bull**** that a cyclist
has to listen to if he got hit by someone. A cyclist is always on his own because
there is no really safe way for cyclists on the road and its widly accepted that
car drivers make mistakes. so as a cyclist its basically your duty to watch out
for yourself AND for the mistakes of others. Thats why a car driver, for me, is on his own and gets no pity. dont want to get hit on the head? well than keep it inside.
thats the mindset that car drivers usually have... "dont want to get hit? then keep out
of my way!"

Fair enough, but if it was unprovoked I'd still like to kick the messenger's ass.

What's more, when word gets aroud that this happened, are cabbies going to be any nicer to cyclists in Chicago? Hell no. And so indirectly, this dickhead is putting me and a lot of other people in danger by pissing people off.
Although I enjoy rage fantasies as much as anyone, no one deserves to get their jaw shattered deliberately unless it's in self defence. I always enjoy the expression of cabbies etc. when you swear at them in their language. A good Kul khara we moot goes a long way (for references for your local cabbies, check out http://www.insultmonger.com)

what is the point of this post? isn't the race there this weekend? what dumbass would smack some hack in the chin for no reason (unless you are forgetting some important piece of info here)? YES FOLKS - TO ME EVEN THIS IS STUPID, and even worse, a 3rd party is bragging about it.

That was exactly my first thought.

sohi, you're an idiot.
actually, there is a safe way for cyclists.. it's not a fail-safe way of riding, but it's a lot safer than the way probably most of us ride. you don't have to weave in and out of traffic, you don't have to squeeze between a truck and a car. but that's not as much fun and it's a lot slower.
how many car drivers have you actually talked to that think "don't want to get hit? then get out of my way?!" i bet it's less than 1% of the drivers.. it's just that those a-holes stick out in our mind much more than the ones who politely slow down so you can pull a lane change.
also, as most decent car drivers will tell you, they too have to watch out for themselves and the mistakes of others. cars making mistakes don't just affect bikes.
now these car drivers have to watch out for a ****ing u-lock, too. and dave made a great point. cyclists are just going to be targeted more now.
knocking a guy's rearview off is one thing (though i still don't condone it), but a broken jaw frickin' hurts like hell.

Great I now feel like even more of a target. And helping out on the messengers' race this weekend should be a blast.

wierd, when did that happen? with 15-20 mesengers standing by at the thompson center today, id figure id have heard...or someone would nexteld me or sumthing. u sure it was really a working messenger? i sure as hell it wasnt some hotheaded rookie, because if it is the old schoolers will have his ass for breakfast
a broken jaw frickin' hurts like hell.
Seconded. But I didn't know it was broken till the next day - thank god for liquid codine!!!!
I've wanted to make a spring loaded wrist thing that shoots crosbow bolts for taking out tires for a while now... See the flat, watch them stop, trackstand outside the window with a finger in the air and your tounge out laughing... Then ride off.
But a U-lock to the face seems more appropriate when they knock you to the ground, then get out of the car and yell at you for denting their fender. If it was just something like getting cut off - no way in hell that's justified.
Today I had the satisfaction of a guy cutting me off to surge towards a red light that had a delivery truck at the next light. For some reason, this guy was trying to move into the right lane (there's only really one lane there, and the intersection he was going towards was a one way that he couldn't turn right on - he must have thought he could squeeze by the truck and get to the head of the stopped cars)...
Anyways, he had to stop behind the truck by about 2 feet, and I came up, put my left hand on his hood to help the pivot, and lifted it with a finger raised. 8 feet later, I hit the crosswalk as the light changed, and never saw him again.
There are jerks everywhere, but physical violence usually does nothing.

I wasn't there, so I dunno what exactly happened, although apparently the cabbie was provoking in some way..thats all I know..

What ever happened to good old pepperspray? Anyway, this make all riders look bad from an outside viewpoint. But I understand the feeling.

I don't know if the person who did it was a jackass. I don't know who did it. Perhaps it was his only choice in action. perhaps it was an accident. I dunno. Listen here Wrench, shut the funk up. Bragging? No. The sharing of information is not bragging. Its called communication.
#60 gave me the info, Cyclorat...you can ask him while you are watching School of Rock...

Somethings are just going to happen. The other day i was riding in a car with a friend of mine and we were in the left lane. I'm looking over at this pizza joint and some young girl with the body from hell wearing practically nothing comes out. So of course I'm looking, I mean I'm old but I'm not dead. Guy in the right lane hits the car in front of him when they brake because he's looking too.
I just laughed, the guy, man that could have been me. So we have to watch out for that factor as well.

funny that i clicked on this thread, cause i happened to be at the thompson center yesterday morning talking with some friends and dude tells us about how he cracked this cabbies jaw the other day. same guy that we're referring to here. and pretty much the exact story. from what he said, the cabbie was definately provoking him. was breaking his jaw justified? who knows? i wan't there. i don't know the guy personally cause i don't messenger, but he definately wasn't some rookie. he seemed to have been around for a minute.

ive heard stories of punches being thrown recently, but nothing involving locks
What a loser!
I LOVE tough guys (that was sarcastic). Seems to me (and I'm in NO way a fighter) if it gets that heavy you should use your fists to settle a major argument. Anyone can use a ULock, hand gun, knife or whatever to attack someone. I hope the jackass who did it gets thrown in a cell for assault.
