Southern California - GMR Ride Reports and/or Pics

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just got back from my first GMR ride. It was punishing but was definitely able to find a pace and stick with it. Thanks for all the info on the forums.
I'm in the middle with the "happy to be alive" smile.
Here's a Mapmyride route for those interested.

Darn good ride if you ask me! Lots of strong riders. Some first timers on the Leaky Fountain Boyz squad. Some STRONG women on the OCRebels squad! It started out nice with the 7 am start but quickly warmed up. Hot and dry at the tough 16 mile point but everyone was kicking butt and suffered thru it. Alex did his first GMR ride, guy climbed well. Dutchboy joined the ride a little late but as expected, caught up, passed then rode off into the sunset. I missed a pic of Dutchboy and Alex. If these guys would slow down, I'd be able to get a pic! Dutchboy always the fun entertaining guy. Telling jokes, making me laugh on the way up. I can't breath! I can't breath, just leave me Dutchboy! I had to set the guy free, Even his "telling jokes pace" was killing me! Hehe! Some dude Jason from Pomona joined our group on the ride. Never met him but we are so much fun, he stuck around! Cool guy! His female friend does GMR all the time, has a blog somewhere but I've never seen it!
Leaky fountain boyz tuffed it out too! Nice job for virgins! One guy headed back early (no names!:p). Gina drove support carrying ice water for us. I know it did me good! She did a good job, only lost one rider, her first so we will forgive her!
Nice day with nice people and good strong riders! Oh yeah, OCCRRick too!Hahaha! Did I mention, Them OCRebel women are Strong!
Caught a glimpe of Pinoybentrider up there on his fixie (crazy dude). Hey, why didn't you join us?! Too good I see! Hehe!
Heading up!

Nice job up GMR :) Always love to see your reports Beanz, makes me want to get out there and ride!
Also, are those Conejo Valley Cyclists jerseys I see? I'd like to find some people in the conejo to ride with, wondering if all the above mensioned and CVC-jerseyed riders are from the OC or if any made the trek from the Conejo.

Yup, pretty sure all these guys ar OC dudes. The Boyz don't call me with the wardrobe report for the rides, so I never match!
The jerseys were "Cruising the Conejo" jerseys I believe. They never invite me to the rides either!:p

Hey Mr. Beanz,
Thanks for your help in bringing this group together. I needed to get back out to tackle the hills and this ride did the trick. Gina's support also made the ride much more enjoyable. It also looked like Gina's trip up and down GMR/GRR today provided some valuable training for her upcoming century. :D
I'm glad we got to chit-chat along GRR to make the miles fly by. It was also nice to meet some of the other BF folks.
Thanks again,
Rick

Nice! Looks like a lot of camelbacks were brought along. We're they really necessary? 2 bottles won't do it until refilling at the village? Or that spring? I want to do that ride sometime soon, but only have 2 bottle capacity. I spose I could carry an extra sport drink bottle in my jersey pocket.

I think the CB's were brought cause it was the first time these guys did GMR and din't know what to expect. Alos not knowinghtat I had Gina with the ice water. Eventhough I've done it several times, I take a CB AND 2 bottles when I do it alone in the heat reaching he village with 1/2 a bottle left. But 2 bottles may be just enough. I've done it but run out of water about 17 miles up, right after the tough spot.
I've seen overheated riders sitting at that same point asking if I have extra water as I ride by.
A few riders had 2 bottles but did refill at the shack when Gina showed up with the ice chest. So yeah, you CAN do it with 2 bottles but expect to run near empty in the heat. I've done it with 1 1/2 during cool season, but GMR gets real hot and dry at the 16'ish mile point.
I usually do the descent with 1/2 a bottle. In today's heat, I use atleast 1 1/2 on the descent! The others also refilled on the descent.:D
BTW, besides the CB's, and all the bottles, Gina carried 6 extra gallons of water and returned home with ONE!:D
Hi guys it was a great ride on a hot day Beanz I know you missed my pic today but you take many of my pic before, today I thought I make it up to you so tried to take some pic but it did not look as good as yours. as you know I can't remember names but on the way up I talk to some of the guys, very nice folks, really enjoied the ride I'll do it again thanks for organizing it for all of us & my special thanks to Gina for the suport & the ice cold water Gina the cool water felt great many thanks to you see you all next week

I guess you all arrived as I left the ranger station. I was wondering if it was the BF group but was heading out already.
It was a good day. We started early and caught shade on many switchbacks so that helped.
As for the water situation, I naturally sweat buckets and it surely poured off me today. I had a small camelback which is equal to 1.5 large waterbottles and I went 3/4 through it, AND a reg size bottle of diluted orange juice. I felt good and feel that I hydrated well. Sometimes I forget.
For me, the more water the better. If I went all the way to the top on a hot day I'd bring two large bottles and a camelback. More weight but bonking sucks.

We are all from OC, or the leaky fountain boys as Mr. Beanz puts it. We did the Conejo ride a few years ago and it just happened that three of us wore the same jersey.

They come from a MTB background and have been wearing them on the road for many years...it's just what they do. It has nothing to do with the amount of water a water bottle will carry, it's just their preference and they ride with them ALL the time. If you'd rather carry extra water bottles, go ahead.

I don't buy that for a minute...you guys were probably texting each other all day yesterday to make sure you'd match!:p

I rode from Encanto up GMR, down to the cafe on East Fork, then turned around and climbed up and over again. It was HOT! I drank 2 1/2 bottles on the way up just GMR from Glendora today - normal for me is 1 bottle to 1 1/2.
I was surprised by all the cars on East Fork - HUNDREDS of them parked everywhere. A guy at the cafe said that's normal for a Sunday afternoon in the summer; everyone likes to go swimming in the creek.

Hahaha! Thanks for the pics Rick. Alex isn't one of the Leaky Fountain Boyz. They won't approve of his membership request till he smiles, and that aint happenin'!:roflmao2:
He's one of the regulars we see on the trial. He could pass for Uncle Nacho's twin brother, but Alex actually only 18 years old!:p:
As far as blistering pace, the only thing blistering on my bike was the new front tire. I used it on a couple of short rides for testing. No problem but 2 miles form the bottom of the GMR descent, the tires decides to go "thump thump thump!. I stopped to insepct it, let out air then slowly cruised down. I guess it didn't like swithcbacks!:D

Actually only ever used Conti's. Just looking for something a bit cheaper. I put the GP's on Gina's since she gets more mileage outta them. Well, the IRC's might be ok for the trail but not GMR! I installed the second IRC (bought a set) but keeping a close eye on it, trail rides only.:D
Well I do use a big fat Armadillo 25 on the rear. I'm thinking maybe I'll switch it to a 23 next GMR ride so I can keep up with Dutchboy2!:roflmao2:...That's a joke for anybody that doesn't know Dutchboy!:p

that info was posted before.....But when I checked it out I noticed a sign next to the faucet that says, not potable". SO I skipped it!:D
Water isn't usually a problem as making it across with 2 bottles is usually enough. It's the really hot days that worry me. I asked Gina to carry water knowing it might get close to 100 Dees-Grees!:D
Without company on a ride, I would have used a Camelback and 2 bottles but hey, it was a forum ride! Part of the fun!:p

I think you guys are being quite generous with your comments. We have all spent enough time on the bike to know there is always someone right around the corner very ready, willing and able to deliver a whoopin'. Somehow I just happened to sneak past that person on Saturday, but they and all their friends are definitely out there.
As I recall, it was OCRR Rick who was helping push one of the riders across GRR to make sure their goal was accomplished. And as for Mr. Beanz, the photos of so many of the other riders could not have been taken unless you were up ahead of them prior to pulling over to take the picture.
It was certainly a nice ride with a good group of people. Thanks for letting me join in the fun.

There was another rider heading up that said "Hey Beanz" as we were descending. I don't know who it was but he looked FAST! If I had tried to head back up, he would have been gone!
That was me Beanz. Thanks for the compliment. I was actually going pretty slow at that point. My intervals were done for the day and I needed a couple more hours of endurance riding. I had originally planned to ride over GMR and up to Dawson's Saddle. I intended to leave early enough to hopefully catch you guys as you were going up GMR but I was behind schedule because I decided to watch the finish of the Mt. Ventoux stage. I did catch George(Vireo) on my way up and chatted with him a bit which was cool because we only usually see each other going in opposite directions. I went down East Fork to 39 and was turned around for the 1st time ever at the gate on 39. I didn't raise a ruckus because there was a CHP nearby who was busy with some motorcyles. I later found out the guy who turned me around was a security guard for a film crew. My friend who was just a few minutes in front of me went right through the gate with the cop's blessing. To finish my ride and get in the time I needed, I figured I would go back through East Fork over GMR and down to Glendora and then back up GMR and across to Baldy. I saw you guys as I was going up the frontside of GMR the second time and hoping to make it across to Baldy. I recognized Gina and came so close to asking her for water since I was out. Instead I descended to Camp Williams to get water and then climbed back up the backside of GMR (again) and went down the frontside and home.

As I recall, it was OCRR Rick who was helping push one of the riders across GRR to make sure their goal was accomplished.
Yes DutchBoy2,
That is true. I was giving Lou Ann little pushes whenever she had the occasional "attitude problem."
And while a ride like GMR might be peanuts to many of us, it's a true challenge for those just getting into cycling. So I am happy to help those new to GMR make it across to The Village. The worst part seems to be between miles 14 and 17.5, in terms of attitude adjustment.
I find a little encouraging conversation and a few pushes go a long way!
Rick / OCRR
Mr. Beanz
07-28-09, 04:19 PM
I recognized Gina and came so close to asking her for water since I was out.
You should have waved her down. If you called her name, she definitely would have stopped! I tell her before GMR rides that if we encounter other riders, she is free to serve out the water knowing the heat conditions up there. If you had told her that you recognized her from the forum, she would have been tickled!:D
I once saw Brandy in her truck up there. She had water for George and even went out of her way to offer some to another forum group that she knew was up there. I was solo. Heck, if all forum people support eachother that way, we got it made!:D
That goes for all the riders out there. GMR is no place to play around on hot days. If you need water, ask if we are up there. Even if you don't like me, you'll like Gina!:p
Heck, I've been up there in my truck when other riders didn't even know I was up there! I've given riders a lift to the village who were strangers to me. Guys that weren't feeling good on hot days. Feel free to ask. She usually offers anyway. But she might have just been trying to keep up with us on the descent.

Peanuts!?...I get very religious at the start of each GMR ride. Not so much towards the end, but very much so at the beginning!:roflmao2:...You'll know what I mean if you've ever seen the movie "The End" with Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLouis!:p
Hi Rick thanks for the pic. I have told Beanz that I'm working on to improve my smile thanks again & I enjoy the ride hope we can do this again

I've never seen that movie Beanz,
But what I meant was that GMR was peanuts, but Very Religious Peanuts.
Lauretta and I did Angeles Crest on Sunday, and that was more miles (80), more climbing (8,800 feet) and lots more trees to ride by. So I'd say compared to AC, GMR is peanuts.
Your Peanuts May Vary!
