So, I am looking for a road bike that I can ride while my Peugeot is in rehab and when it's too cold/rainy/sunny to take her out. I found these two bikes on the local CL. I want a cheep, dependable, serviceable, bike with UNIVERSALY SIZED COMPONENTS to ride for fitness, fun and transportation.
This one looks sturdy and workmanlike.

this one "does things" to me, but I already have an old, interesting, fancy bike "doing things" to me and my wallet!

A Murray weighs more than you do. I'd go for what's behind Door Number 2.

Ditto
Can't tell the condition of the 2nd bike but it's of higher quality. It will be a nicer ride.
While the second one is better, it appears to be very low end, steel rims, etc. But 100X better than the Murray.
Read all the threads about steel rims and rain since this is going to be your foul weather bike. Myself, I would be looking for one of the decent rigid frame steel mountain bikes. They are pretty indestructible, will have alloy rims and components (at least the good ones) and are underappreciated (so the pricing should be low).

oh, the raliegh is a done deal. picking that up for the Mrs. It's the other one that I'm "iffy" about. I kow the Murray will be a tank, but it won't cost much in time effort or money to keep running OR to buy. I Do hope to use that Peugeot as my front-line bike.

That fooking sword logo adds about forty-three cool points.

The Capri is a low end bike, priced appropriately. Should sell at that price. But do you want a low end bike?

What you describe here makes me think of a road bike from the 1980s, perhaps a Japanese bike or a chromoly Schwinn. You'll pay a little more but you'll also get better, more "universal" components. You'll feel more like riding these too. In the end, you'll end up saving money I would guess.
This seems a little pricey, but is an example

Get a Fuji...that's had little use and no abuse...they are usually cheap (undervalued .... IMHO), dependable and serviceable with easy to find parts. An S-12-S for about $100 or a Gran Tourer for $50 would be a "no brainer".

Not high end, but if it is actually Chromoly, I think it is worth $100.

Yes they would, however, those prices are well under market (at least around here). A good S12S around here will bring around $200.
