We are thinking about going to our local drive-in theater. I haven't been to one in over 20 years. We want to see the new Harry Potter movie, but I'm worried that the drive-in experience isn't what I remember it as. I'm hoping the sound is better than it used to be. The last time I went they still used those speakers that you hung off your window. Should we see this movie at a regular theater, or risk going to a drive-in? The cost is $11 per person and we get to see 2 shows (Harry Potter and The Hangover ... never heard of that one).

i'm surprised they still have a drive in where you are. is SW Ontario that sleepy?

Go for it. Most drive in's these days have FM broadcast band transmitters for the audio, so you can listen to the audio through your car's stereo. I prefer the drive in to a regular theater.

We're a relaxed bunch. What can I say.

I believe most drive-in's have you use your radio much like ipods use a transmitter tuned to an 'empty' spot on the dial. Our closed ~25 years ago.

The one I used to go to as a teenager closed a long time ago as well. When I moved to Ontario I was surprised to see they still have one running. Not sure how many people still go out here or what to expect for lineups.

I remember going to them as a kid. It was fun. Most of them are gone now, but I think there's one in the area somewhere.

It's $11 per person? I always thought they charged by the car.

According to their website, they charge by the carfull on Thursdays only.

Ah. Bummer.

That just means you have to borrow a car with a trunk big enough for a few friends.

I've done that before.

They also prohibit outside food. How would they ever know?

Thanks. Hopefully the radio will sound OK. I have a feeling that going to a regular indoor theater might be better for a movie like Harry Potter where you want to experience a high quality picture and sound. For most other movies I would have no problem going to a drive-in. It's just something I feel like doing tonight. We have to make up our minds soon before the movie starts.

All movie theatres prohibit outside food, doesn't ever stop me bringing it in, yo.

I expect a drive-in is a great place to make out like teenagers, eh?

Come to think of it, I can't remember the details of any movie I saw at a drivein :D

Theres a drive-in I go to every once in awhile in SD. It's really fun at night especially since my truck has a system so I usually bring a blanket and sit in the bed :D

BTW the hangover is a really funny movie if you like partying :)

Here's the info page about our local drive-in. Second oldest continuously running drive-in in the country. They have FM transmitters.

I miss out drive in. They closed the last one in Winnipeg 2 years ago. Apparently they said they needed full house every day in July & August just to break even (seemed high to me).

Nice to see there are still active drive-ins.

But . . . "Harry Potter" and "The Hangover"? That's a kid's/young teen's movie about magic & sorcery paired with a raunchy "R" rated movie about a Las Vegas bachelor party gone wrong. Might want to rethink that if you're taking kids.

We have a happenin' drive-in, but it's tough in the summer since it's still daylight after 10pm. Only just about now getting dark enough for the movie to start after 9, a bit bright still if it's a dark or low-contrast flick.

In non-sleepy SoCal, very near where I live, there is a drive-in theater!

I've only been there once though, and I must say I much rather prefer an actual theater or watching at home with DVDs.

I'd recommend watching Harry Potter in an actual theater.

We didn't get to go last night so we're thinking about maybe going tonight. I've got some great memories going to drive-ins. Hopefully I still enjoy them. I might be getting too used to great sound and picture. I'm not sure.

No kids. We just have to make sure our 2 jack russells are quiet during the movie :D

Yeah, a 9:15 start seemed a bit early. I would have thought a 10pm start would have been better.

You're missing the appeal of the drive-in theater. You're not actually supposed to watch the movie

I don't know if HW's drive in is the same as the one just a couple of miles from me, but we do still have a drive in around here.

Was just going to mention the Skyline on the way to Shelton....used to be an XXX drive in when I was in high school, now it is family friendly.

I have one about a 1/2 mile from my home. I can sit on my front walk and see it (I used to be able to watch from the front bedroom window till the tree grew). I can see it pretty easy with a pair of binoculars. Now if I can only find a sensitive enough FM receiver. :)

Last time I went to one was about 10-12 years ago. I was nearly the only one in the parking lot and they still had the hang of your window speakers. I remember having to stick my ear right next to the speaker to hear it because the sound level and quality were so bad.

They did have the am broadcast version, but it was so weak and scratchy that it was even worse than the speaker.
