I think Armstrong did what he came out to do. While he would of liked to win supposedly, he definitely has raised more awareness for livestrong that's for sure in the TDF. People don't get it, this guy isn't just riding for himself, he is riding for everyone out there struggling with cancer. But he understands the better he does in cycling, the more people will watch him, so raising awareness and finishing strong goes hand in hand. He isn't just a 7 time TDF Champion, but he is also a humanitarian.

His 3rd place finish is more of an impact than Contador's 1st place finish.....in my opinion.
If you look at the Livestrong website or his twitter feed it is obvious what he means to some people that can relate to him and his cancer experience. It's too bad that there are those that would rather tear him down than acknowledge his presence of hope in addition to what he brings to the world of cycling. Here's to TRS and raising the bar for next year on all fronts.
I do not believe Armstrong should be put on any pedestal, nor do I believe he knocked down for his efforts.
Neither winner or loser .
He is but a human being . . like all of us.
Hope, is a kind of fools gold. It's like walking down a dark alley in the middle of the night . . . . and whistling as we go to in an attempt to hide from our fears. There are no monsters "out there". . . the monsters lie within us. It takes courage to embrace the fear. . . to stick with the present moment, because it's all we have.

I'll bet big money on the fact that you would Llooove to be able
to ride beside him in the Tour. I for one, would love too.
Yep, we are all Human. Some of are just more capable.

It can be both, and for many people that is a good thing.

Why, so he can make some more snide remarks?
We don't need more of that.

Well I am sort of thinking Bellweatherman has filled his shoes, but then again they may be one in the same.

Not a a ride for awareness or fundraising? Tell that to Garmin, HTC, Columbia, FdJ, Skill, Shimano, Cd'E, Liquigas, Skoda, Rabobank, etc., etc.
Actually, I think what Lance has done for raising awareness, funds and pushing programs to fight cancer and help its victims is amazing and should truly be lauded. But I was glad to see that aside from the Livestrong logo on his helmet and bike and a few interview comments that there was not some huge push of Livestrong. It left the race be the race. I'm sure that this mission is part of his motivation but I'll bet if you interviewed the full peloton that you would find other inspirational stories.

haha... i also think its ridiculous that the media always credits lance with "raising awareness" for cancer... lance is an inspiration to many people that are battling cancer... but this has nothing to do with awareness.

He is one of many raising awareness, plus his work helps raise money for research.

when i saw the interview this morning with lance i wanted to puke. when asked about contador he made that face and declined to comment and said "people can see what's going on."
what i heard was "paled around with terrorists".
lance is a self-centered, self-serving a-hole.

Bringing attention to Cancer is, by definition, increasing awareness.
I've dealt with it professionally, as a physician, and personally. My wife actually sobbed through the last thirty minutes of Ventoux. Lance may very well be a jerk in real life and should never be exempt from the responsibilities of being a decent human being, but he has done an exceptional job as an advocate for funding and research and, hence, "awareness". Just my opinion, but there really is not much more to say about it.

my thought is a good deed is a good deed no matter what your motivation. but to watch lance attempt to usurp the command of the best stage racer in the world and swiftboat the guy while hiring away astana team members for his own team and make me want to puke.
could you imagine if someone had done that to lance when he was captain of postal or discovery? well you don't have to dig to deep to see how he treats people that defy him.

considering their financial troubles leading up to the tour, the only reason AC may have gotten to race was because of LA. So, maybe he should be thanking him. As far as "hiring" others away... BS. They are all talking to different teams right now and nothing for anyone will be finalized to October. Heck, even Big George said as much.
Lance may be the biggest prick in the world (personally I doubt it) but he HAS won the tour 7 times, he HAS had to personally deal with cancer and the fear that is associated with it, and he HAS created a foundation that likely raises more in one hour than you have (or most folks for that matter) have or will give to a charity in their lives. Thats why some of us, even those of us that have been waching the tour since we were 11 back in 1985, respect the man for. Sorry you cannot see past your dissalusionment and find the positive and what just occured.
AC is one hell of a bike rider... But thats it. Lance Armstrong helps others and that is far nobler than a win in the tour anyday.

how do you know that about contador? you're doing exactly what lance wants you to do.
"you're either with me or against me."
so you're putting down contador and i haven't heard him say one negative thing about lance or astana thoughout this whole tour and considering the way his team turned on him after lance came onboard that leads me to believe that AC is a true professional who's not going to air team business via twitter or roll his eyes and say "i'm going to bite my tongue on that one."
you idolize an a-hole, but of course that's your prerogative.
ed rader
I did find it rather unsporting of both Armstrong and Contador today though, as usually the podium finishers at least shake hands and share some genuine comradery. The whole ceremony seemed rather cold. It was like watching two children (LA and AC) too stubborn to get along . If they can't even fake it in public, that says a lot.

No, I complemented him by saying he is one hell of a bike rider. I just respect Lance more for his work with the LIVESTRONG. As to what AC is saying, I do not speak fluent Spanish so I am not up with what he has to say on Spanish TV.
As to the rest of your comment, meh. You do not know what you are talking about. Then again, you have pretty much proven that with every post on here.
He could not see to it to attend the team party either. While I don't know the reasoning . . on the surface it appears to be just bad taste.

I generally take all media reports, good and bad, with a grain of salt. But this one is hard to explain. If it was really all about cancer awareness and the team winning, then why is Lance so bent at Alberto Contador? Sure there have been a couple of tactical disagreements on the team during the race. But nothing that should allow the situation to elevate to this level. Lance can't celebrate with the "team" because he wants have drinks with his new partners. He's got everyday after Saturday to do it. "I'm not going to his party because he wouldn't listen and beat me.":troll:

You write that while going under the username Roman 8:28? Really?
He has no need to mention his foundation.
1) its on every stitch of clothing he wears
B) its written on his bike
III) he has face recognition and considering that his foundation is not hurting for donations, he is dong fine just being a "face".
If he HAD mentioned the foundation in interviews (which I do think he did once but thats besides the point) you and others would have been berating him for that. Face it. He cannot win in the face of the Lance Haters.

I don't hate LA, I disapprove of his behavior and I truly think that he has damaged his own image greatly.
I bring up the foundation, only to illustrate a point as to what his purpose was verses the image he portrayed. He may have originally came out of retirement to spread a massage, but in the end it was lost. A victim of his conniving with JB to the detriment of AC.
I did not drink the Lance cool-aid, so I call them like I see them.
I am sorry, but what he tried to do to the kid was just wrong, flat wrong and very incompatible with his "message" IMO

I have to agree, it hurt Contador greatly... What, with all the coniving and backstabbing going on, he barely won the tour by 4 minutes... Its almost like he could barely make it. I bet he cried himself to sleep every night not knowing that he was going to dominate.:twitchy:

Good lord.
LA has been auctioning off his bikes after his races. Remember the time trial bike that got stolen that was on display? His bikes are worth quite a bit of money after he finishes with them, and I'm sure he's going to raise quite a bit of money for his foundation. I'm goody with that. I've heard LA say on several occasions that he's bringing awareness to cancer with his return and how he's auctioning off his bikes. I've been listening to all his interviews closely.
I know he's arrogant- I see it how he talks. Sheesh, he was upset that AC attacked and got time on him? He should be more upset that he couldn't respond to the attack. AC was right- if he'd hung around waiting for LA all day, they might have let one of the Schlek brothers (or both) ride right on past, and AC would have been in third, and LA wouldn't have even gotten his foot on the podium. Plus, with two "leaders" on the team, I don't get how anyone thought this wasn't going to turn out exactly how it turned out? One leader, one team. Otherwise, you get this kind of contention, and I'm sure that's not what anyone is used to experiencing.
We have to remember that Vino is returning next year. I can't wait... but I can bet AC will be loooooooooong gone by that point. I could not even imagine what that team would be like with Vino AND AC on the team. I'm sure it would have spilled right into the race. At least AC and LA could put on the game face and get out there and keep their team together. Kudos.
As far as the negotiations for teams, I seem to remember on the last day of nearly ever Tour, there's tons of speculation and lots of talk about who's moving to what team next year. This isn't anything new. And if you're basing your team all about the Tour, and you see some potentially great tour riders, you'd certainly want to pull them aside before it ended and start talking up the next year. This is the time the people are looking to get the new contracts lined up. I don't see anything wrong with it unless the riders sign the contracts mid-race and change alliances during the Tour. Since that's not going to happen, what's the problem with talking? I kind of like hearing about what going on in the sidelines. It's kind of like fanning the flames for me. I'd like to see a reshuffling of the teams and see some real action next year!

The fact of the matter is that no matter what we read from a source on the internet, there's always more to any story. For every article that gets published online about the issue, there are probablly 100 more people who have heard or seen another side of the story that we will never hear about. All we can really do is speculate, which is easy to do from the other side of the Atlantic.
That being said, what Lance has done for cancer is great. No matter how arrogant he comes across, he has done a lot for quite a few people. I watched the tour because I like to watch racing, and I could have cared less about all the team leadership *****ing. If I wanted drama, I would watch soap operas. Otherwise, I will do my best to pay attention to just the racing side of the equation.
For the record, I am a '99er, Lance is the reason I started riding bikes, and I have had the pleasure of riding with him and he was nothing but courteous, polite, and frankly, just like the other guys I was riding with. That doesn't mean he can't be arrogant, can't be a jerk, or I have to agree with everything he does or says.

Exactly. all I've seen him do with regards to "raising awareness about cancer," at least at this tour, is slapping on his cheesy hat when the cameras are on.
How about donating the prize money to the foundation. Oh wait......
He's riding at least as much for himself as his foundation. Thats OK, but it's not enough to get you canonized, like some are so eager to do.

Am I missing something? I was aware of cancer before the tour. I am aware of cancer after the tour. I've been making annual contributions to the American Cancer Society (and a few others claiming to do work related to cancer) without any consciousness raising by Lance or LiveStrong. While I do my best to avoid second-hand smoke, too much red meat, and sucking exhaust tailpipes, I know I can still be stricken with cancer.
There's a bicycle dealer in town who sells black plastic bracelets that he orders from Australia, embossed with "Harden the **** up." I think I'm going to get mine tomorrow.
