currently i am running a granny ring, 32t and bashguard. if i were to remove the granny, front derailleur, and front shifter, would I have a problem with the chain popping off easily or something not working correctly? thanks

Funny: I have a 32t granny on my rear freewheel! Can't imagine you'd have trouble with the chain coming off since the derailleur makes it move & come off, otherwise it stays put. Need a bash guard when chain doesn't move? And the lack of the granny gear shouldn't make any difference (unless you end up in the Ozarks without it!)

The granny gear is on the crank set.... If your derailleur has a strong spring to take up the chain slack it should keep the chain on the front chain ring, if your riding on the road, but if your riding off road you may bounce the chain off the ring. Also make your chain as short as you can, that will help

Without a front derailer, you increase the chances of the chain slipping of the chainring. When the chain is slack and bounces, it can lift off the first couple teeth in the chainring. The front derailer helps keep the chain from coming off when you start pedalling again. I would expect the problem would be worst when using the largest rear sprocket since the chainline would have the greatest lateral force. Perhaps if you were to center the remaining chainring you could minimize the problem. I seem to recall one of the riders in the TdF last year removed his front derailer in the prologue and slipped the chain. He was a very unhappy camper.

I guess the real question is why remove the chanring and front derailer? Are they too heavy for you?

im really only going to remove the granny because i never use it. Im getting an evil srs for my stinky and i want to make this bike the same way without getting a guide. what if i sandwiched the 32t ring in between two bash guards, i then wouldnt have problems with the chain falling off, right?
Also my front derailleur doesnt fit this bike right due to the smaller tubing of this new frame, so i made a "spacer" for the front derailleur. it works but its not great and i am not going to spend money on another front derailleur if I never use the granny anyway.

Run a chain tensioner and a bash guard, I run a 38t ring mounted mid triple mtb.
No problems, just nice quiet jumps. I dislike front deraillers on bikes I jump, hate chain rattle.
Hell that little thing is 12 teeth smaller and really not good for catching chains. Also my bike weighs 20 lbs, I have no problems pushing 12\28 up just about anything.

Tensioner\guide is recommended. The chains lenght is for the big ring, not the granny.
If altering to smaller mono ring you may want to remove a few links.

To save time, and if you don't care\ don't have crank pullers, snip granny twice and unbolt.
(On 5 bolt standard the mid\lrg rings go over the spider, the granny is too small and has to be bolted on while spider is off the spindle?)

I'm a bike meanie.

Supcom:I guess the real question is why remove the chanring and front derailer? Are they too heavy for you?

I did it for the loss 3\4 lbs, I hate chain rattle, my bikes light, don't need all them gears\ cleans up the design near the cranks ( I have an ovaled seat tube). Always rode mid ring.
Seemed logical, I can swap it back anyday I like...that day hasn't come.

Sandwich it, I didn't 'cause it's an older ht and it would look stupid. Also I went up teeth not down so I have little clearance between the frame and ring.

I would like to get a tensioner for this bike too but i just spent $125 on the evil srs for my stinky and i really shouldnt have because i need to save my money for a car for college. I might just take off the derailleur and just see how the bike runs without it. I just looked at the bike again and i dont know if there is enough clearance for doing two bashguards so i will just see how it runs now and try to get another guide in the future.

$15 for a cheapo that will die with a good hit. You probably only need a lower guide, to get the rear derailler body flexed, and the chain up.
I built a simple one with parts from a motion film projector and mounted off the chainstay. Works fine but would not survive any great whack.

Edit: I have no chain jump with one bashguard, tensioner>lower and lrg 38 t ring. None..well once I was wearing baggy jeans and they got caught...BUT THAT DON"T COUNT.

Also I'm talking small jumps, not full dh 'to the woodchoppers ball' runs.>'You call THAT a cliff?.. Ha!'

That stuff I'd get a dual roller, bb mounted unit. And a heavier bike.
