Southern California - Windy heading north from San Diego to San Clemente?

Title pretty much says it all. Is it windy heading north from San Diego to San Clemente?

We're from NorCal and the PCH is far windier heading north. Same issue in SoCal?

yes, heading north there is normally a slight headwind.. In the afternoons the wind seems to shift to a more Westerly wind, so more of a crosswind.

If you're up and on the road earlier in the morning, I'd say it's not windy. Less traffic too, so a double benefit. Later in the am, the breeze/wind picks up after the cloud burn off.

It seems to pick up around 10:00 a.m.

I get that feeling most days as well! :D The last time I rode that route, it was windy heading north... Not sure of going south in the afternoon as we took the train back! :eek:

If you're accustomed to NorCal's winds, Pendleton's breeze will feel like nothing at all. (As long as the Santa Anas don't suddenly blow.)

If you recall So Cal is isn't really North/South but really alittle East/west due to the bend at LA...

We tend to get on-shore and off shore breezes... generally more in the afternoon (starting around 2) when we get an on-shore breeze. This means if you are traveling West, it's the wind in your face. But honestly, I've done rides, where I ride in a square and have a head wind (or tail) the entire time. It tends to just blow in all directions.

Santa Anas' a whole other thang!

Check the weather reports at Oceanside, San Clemente, and Dana Point...usually the wind is out of the SW....which gives you a tailwind to a cross-wind as the coastline curves northwesterly...a few times this summer its been SSW when its been really warm....the WSW direction brings more of the fog and cloud cover onshore.

Mornings....light wind....2-5pm is when the wind is strongest, and starts lightening up with either cloud cover or after 5pm....

Just for the record ... our ride last weekend was blissfully devoid of headwinds and tailwinds. Our Friday ride from San Clemente to San Diego was still as could be as there was a pretty heavy marine layer. Saturday, on our way back up to San Clemente, our ride was boosted by offshore winds always at the rear, oftentimes at our tail.

I don't know if this was a fluke but compared to what I'm used to in NorCal, this ride was blessedly devoid of nasty headwinds.

When I lived in Encinitas and would do the Wed. Ride regularly (Leucadia to San Clemente) we would have a light headwind on the way north and by 10 or so, the wind would clock around and we would have a tailwind for the ride back south.

Of course this varys with seasons and conditions, just beware if there's a Santa Ana blowing. One time I rode up to Whittier from Encinitas and had a major headwind the whole way. All the while I was fighting that headwind, I kept thinking how good it was going to be the next day when I would ride back south, thinking I would get a nice tailwind. Wrong, the Santa Ana had moved south and what I thought was going to be a nice tailwind, turned into another brusing 6 hour ride into a strong headwind.
