I'm looking to purchase a bike lock and am having trouble deciding on a strong, durable lock to deter would-be thieves. I've always used cable locks in the past, but the one time my bike was stolen, it was unlocked. I'm going to be moving to LA soon and commuting there. I want to reduce the likeliness of my bike getting stolen over another nearby.

The "case-hardened" chain (http://www.bikeregistry.com/estore/product_info.php?products_id=54&osCsid=2b904e5b1a4f4dcf270e42d0153e8814) on BikeRegistry is interesting me right now more than a U-Lock from Kryptonite. Particularly, I was looking at the Evolution™ Mini LS. I don't really want to spend $70+ on the Fuggedaboutit. Does anyone here have experience with the BikeRegistry chain lock? Any ideas on other options? Thanks in advance!

well what part of LA will you be moving to? It's a big city and some parts are much safer than others.

Right now the plan is to commute from somewhere in the Hollywood area to Pasadena. I'll be keeping the bike indoors at home, but while I'm on campus, I want some feeling of security that I won't have to walk home.

Well ask your teachers if you can keep the bike in the class, it's worth a try. I tell them I don't feel safe leaving it outside and just about all of my teachers have been understanding.

That could be a possibility, but I also don't own a lock at all. For the time when I can't be bringing it indoors, like while I'm shopping, I would like some sort of theft deterrent. In the past, I've had plenty of luck with employers letting me keep my bike indoors, but not with teachers.

I don't know how it is in Pasadena but in Hollywood I'd take two small U locks. Maybe two krypto evolutions so you can use Sheldon Brown's method and U lock the front wheel to the frame.

ah but I'm assuming you have some sort of road bike. I don't know how well the mini locks work with mountain bikes or hybrids.

Small U locks have a limited usefulness if you don't always have the ability to lock your bike to a certain type of bike rack. If you have to use a rack with thick bars or a parking meter or a signpost, you're out of luck.
