Hi Folks,

I'm wondering if anyone else is familiar with a problem that I had recently during the night after a relatively strenuous 70 mile ride. Sorry if this isn't the best forum to ask, I didn't see another one that seemed more health related.

I tend to sleep hot (especially my legs) after a ride of 40 miles or more. This time I woke up at 2 am a bit sweaty, and had kicked off the covers. I awoke because I had begun shivering, although it was not a cold night (late July in NC never is). Soon after that I started shaking more strongly, like all of my abdominal muscles were spasming simultaneously. I had to cover up and pull together tightly to get it under control, even though I felt very hot doing this. After several minutes I was back to normal.

I have been fine since then. I rode another 40 miles the next day without any issues.

I've been on several long rides in the past, including some significantly longer ones. This is the first time I've had a body temperature problem the night after. Is this a go to the doctor kind of problem?

What did you drink and eat during and after the long ride? Was it very hot during your ride?

Hello Msincredible,

The ride had typical rest stop food plus some ice cream. I try to replace some of the energy and a fair amount of the water I'm going through. I had some fig newtons, some salty peanuts, orange slices, half a banana. And a reasonable amount of ice cream (one scoop halfway and another on returning).

I drank mostly water with some gatorade mixed in.

My stomach wasn't upset when I woke up with the shakes. I usually get a headache when I have nausea, and my head felt fine at the time.

WAY, WAY, WAY back when I used to race bicycles in my youth I did used to suffer from chills after a hard race, particularly in winter. Also heavy exercise will depress your immune system a little and its possible that the sweating followed by shivering was a mild fever.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it becomes overly common for you. Also these days I take a bit of fish oil for omega 3's and one of the first things I notice was that I felt warmer on cold nights and I pretty much stopped shivering.
