I watched the 2008 Ironman yesterday on TV. The women's winner flatted out on the course and had only 1 CO2 cartridge. She screwed up rushing and lost all the CO2. After standing for 5 minutes on the roadside, someone stopped to help.
But why wouldn't she have more than 1 or a mini-pump as backup? This isn't like the Tour where there's constant support vehicles.

She probably thought she wouldn't get a flat. I went out a couple of time without a spare and a pump. Not anymore thought after a nail went through the tire and both the top and the bottom of the tube.
I personally hate CO2 cartridges. I hate seeing them lay along the road along with all the other trash cars throw out. Use a pump or carry them out after use. I would really love it if they weren't sold anymore.

That was Chrissie Wellington. BTW - she went on to win! She's amazing.
For most people at that level, a flat means you're out of the money anyway, so I guess they don't worry about a 2nd CO2.

If that's your logic they should ban Gu packs also, because I see a lot more of them laying around.
Although there was some satisfaction at the last triathalon we were at where the 2nd place overall took a minute penalty and bumped to third for throwing an empty pack on the bike leg. "Littering on the course"
