Folding Bikes - Best Single Speed Folder?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
IM looking for a single speed folder. Im thinking of getting the Dahon boardwalk ( are they still produced by Dahon?) and just replacing a few parts. Any other folders that come single speed out of the box that I should take a look at?
Dahon also makes the Mu Uno. You can probably turn a Xootr Swift into an SS. Finally, there is a version of the Bike Friday Tikit that comes in SS. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Good luck.

The boardwalk is along the lines of price that I want to pay. Are they still made? I see 2009 model DLT? But non on their website..
Yes, I believe they are still made. You can also find some used on ebay and craigslist.

Performancebike has it and also a 15% off coupon. I believe the boardwalk has horizontal dropouts. Also, this model does not appear on Dahon's website. It is supposed to be a DLT (Dahon Licensed Technology). Note, that you cannot adjust the handlebar height, but might be able to cut it and use an ahead stem.

I think the Dahon's about the best in that price range, short of doing a lot of work on an old 20. I have one and like it a lot, although the hinges are now beginning to wear out and repair isn't really an option.
So, bottom line on the Boardwalk: Nice bike, but expect the hinges (and pedals, and chain) to wear out in a year or two if you give it some abuse.

I have a Boardwalk circa 2005 and I replaced the front wheel, installed the telescoping seatpost with pump and handlebars stem so I can replace the handlebars. I installed better front brakes and brake lever. I installed Primo Comet tires on the rims. I also installed a alloy crankset off of a MTB that I had. Pretty spendy and a lot of work. I am now going to convert my Pocket Rocket to a Singlespeed.
Not sure if your looking in higher price range but you can get the Brompton in s/s.I have one its a S1E(ss no fenders s type handle bars)
My understanding is that since 2009 Brompton can be S1E.

Performance Bike has a 20% off sales today (8/1) and tomorrow (8/2). They carry the Dahon line and the 2009 Boardwalk is listed at $229.99. Take 20% off and you have what? About $184 plus shipping? Now that is an excellent value.

If you're looking for a single speed bike, this might be your chance.

You can't adjust the handlebars up and down, but don't they telescope closer to you?

I am pretty sure that both the 2008 and the 2009 U.S.A. model Boardwalk have a one-piece welded handlepost/handlebar assembly. A hacksaw is likely necessary for any adjustments.:)

I purchased a Boardwalk from ebay for under $80 several years ago with the intent converting it into a fixed gear. I swapped out the rear wheel for an alex bmx rim, slapped on a fixed gear cog and bb lockring; aka a suicide hub. Hacked off a good amount of the handlepost and used a 1 1/8" quill stem to secure my cut down flat bar. Also changed out the bb, crank arms and pedals.
All in all it is a great little conversion I take with me in my Honda Civic Wagon so I can go on some lunch hour rides at work.

HGR3inOK,
YOU ARE CORRECT - it's a welded, single piece handlepost/handlebar assembly.
A far cry from the vertically adjustable one on the 2005 model.

I dont understand why they decided to use a one piece handelpost on the new Boardwalks as opposed to the telescoping ones they use to use? Seems like a step back imo.

To keep the price down...maybe?
