A biggy with a great great field of riders.

Will be interesting to see Valverdes form. I believe Contador is slated to start along with the Shleck brothers though who knows how tired they are.
CHAVANEL, IVANOV, FREIRE, GARATE, Kolobnev, SANCHEZ???

This would be a great race to go to. San Sebastian is a great town. Beautiful scenery, wonderful food, and good riding.
I rode there in 2005 after the TDF, but wasn't there to see the race. It seems like this weekend is early for it. I thought it was usually like a week or two before the Vuelta.

And here we have the unfortunate story of Professional cycling, at least in the U.S.
With the TDF over for the better part of the week, and with a Classic race coming up this weekend, everyone wants to continue to beat dead horse TDF threads, and there's zero interest in the race coming up.
If we cyclists, and alleged cycling fans don't give a crap about anything outside the TDF, why should we expect anyone else to do so?
And this is why the Veulta will not be on Versus.

But it'll be on Universal Sports, which is a much better situation!

Yes, it will be a refreshing change from the All-Lance, All-Astana network.
I gotta think Valverde will be very tough to beat. Figure he'll be super motivated after being held out of the Tour. He going to be fresh compared to the other guys who rode the TdF.
Actually, just saw this thread. It is nice to talk about other races.

Doesn't look like AC is going to ride. No surprise given the Astana situation. And from a list that I saw, only Andy Schleck is riding. No Frank.
and Andy has said he is not riding to win. just to ride. whatever that means. later.

You guys shouldn't beat yourselves up too much about the coverage. Even the European media and TV outlets are asleep on this one.
Note the number of riders bringing their Tour form down to the Basque Country.....

What's with all the DNFs? Looks like half the field was a bunch of quitters.
Strong showing for Roman Kreuziger after a great Tour de France. Wonder if another team could entice him away from Liquigas, which is dominated by Italians. How many Czechs are there in professional cycling, anyway?

Yeah, its like a third of the field said, "screw it" and just stopped. They said it was raining pretty bad. Maybe there was a split in the peloton or something. I dunno.

Coverage of this race was pretty spotty.
Something about his back. But no specifics. His ride in the Vuelta may be in jeopardy.
