I know this belongs in the Bike Mechanics forum but I figured some commuters would appreciate this. I've done it with great success.

I cut the sidewalls (and bead, of course) off old tires (low or worn tread preferably) and insert the remaining tread portion into the new tire as a liner. Obviously the tire you use as a liner must be the same diameter as the new one.

Makes for heavy tires, but if you are having chronic flats I haven't found a cheaper or more effective fix.

would work well with a thin tyre and a heavy duty tyre combination. This is something I'd definitely try if I had a serious flat problem. So far my armadillos have held out though.

Yeah, high quality tires are the best choice overall, especially for nice bikes.

The used-tire tire liner is more appropriate for clunker tank cargo type bikes.

Does it roll lumpy?

Nope, and the tires I put in were worn down knobbies.

I just had my first flat on an Armadillo (Nimbus) after about 1.5 years of using them. Well, using Armadillos...the current set have only been on my bike since January or so. A piece of wire got into it somehow. Tragic. :(
