Bicycle Mechanics - need new crankset trek y3.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I have an old trek Y3. It still has all the stock drive train on it and I want/need to upgrade the bottom bracket and crankset. I want to use outboard bearings. It is an 8 speed. Can I use a 9 speed crankset with my 8 speed chain? Will the derailluer change gears normally?
Outboard bearings should be no problem. 8spd chain compatibility with 9spd CW is very good,
the cassette slightly less so but acceptable. Der should also function normally. Main ? is how
much chain wear there is. If chain wear is more than 1/16", get a new 9spd chain, $20-25
well spent.
thank you, I ordered a 9 speed chain with the crankset.

You will likely need to adjust the rear-derailleur for the change, but that's easy. I hope you have the proper tools to do the installation - or can borrow same. And you'll be needing a torque-wrench.
