this guy's selling his 2003 Kona Stuff on CL for $285. Is this a good price? I know people really like this bike.

It's decent. Just make sure it hasn't been thrashed within an inch of its life by a 13-year-old with a love for dirt jumping.

what should i look for that would tell me that? besides clear cracks in the frame of course. what signs of rough use are there?
Other than a general 'worn' look, mismatched rims and other non-stock parts, especially if they look either beefier or cheaper than stock. All that would be indicators of thrashed things that got replaced.
And cycle the fork through and see if leaves traces of fluid/goo on the stanchions (could point to blown or leaking seals and a life of hard use).

Dminor, I put a new front wheel on mine so I could get a disc. I can't on the back so they don't match. Just sayin', not always an accurate thing to look for.
Not in and of itself for sure. But if I was looking at the whole package and it's beat and scraped, the insides of the stays have tire rubs and there's a big ol' Mammoth laced up in the back, I'd guess that bike got some hard use ;).
