On velonews they had an article about some teams using new tubeless tires on certain wheels. What is tubeless? I understand the difference between tubular and clincher (pretty sure I do at least) but what is tubeless? I read some of the advantages of it in the article and it sounded like tubular. Is there still some sort of inner tube in tubular?

I know Mavic had been talking about tubeless road tyres but I hadn't realised anyone was making them yet. Tubeless tyres have been around the MTB world for quite a number of years now (about five). Some people swear by them but I think they're a hassle for general riding. Basically, there is no inner tube. The tyre seals against the rim which is airtight. There's a valve that's inserted directly into the rim. Think of an automobile tyre. The problem is if you puncture, it's a pain. Most MTBers end up carrying a spare tube in case of punctures. Repairing tubeless tyres can also be messy and don't always work out too well... at least for MTB tubeless tyres I've dealt with. The advantages are no chance of pinchflats, lower rolling resistance and a potentially lighter overall wheel system.

Tubeless work great in off road motorsports ATV's but again if you have problem slow leaks you end up putting a tube in it, or sliming it. Tire bead seal is very important in tubeless.

Ahhh fire works about to begin, soooo looong and enjoy this American holiday!
