Mountain Biking - Santa Cruz bikes

Hey guys!

I posted in the MTB forum a few months ago, but ended up getting a commuter bike instead. Now I'm back looking for a mtb after I've saved a few paychecks :)

I was wondering why no one really recommends/talks about Santa Cruz bikes a whole lot?

Also, what is the difference between the Superlight and the Juliana? I compared specs between the small Superlight and the medium Juliana and all the components and the geometry look to be the exact same to me, what am I missing??

Juliana is a girl version.

Santacruz bikes suck a dirty fart...especially the Heckler. Terrible reputation.

Julianas are essentially resized Superlights as you've noted (with some other differences), for the smaller female build.

But that's what I don't get because they don't seem resized to me at all, they seem exactly the same, same geometry, same components. No comprendo.

What is their bad reputation??

Nice job on that Blur build, very nice looking bike.

The Blur is about the only Santa Cruz id buy.

Their only bad reputation is that they make excellent stuff that puts other good stuff to shame.



One thing that makes me love SantaCruz so much is Rob Roskopp's history. He knows what it's like to be a pro athelete and need good equipment. All that trickles down to the consumer. Respect the screaming hand!!

By resized I meant that they take the same frame and give it a new size name for the smaller (and fairer) of the sexes...small superlite becomes a medium juliana, a medium superlite becomes a large juliana, etc...then spec it a bit differently to make it a more female specific bike. I haven't compared specs on the frame myself but last time I did this appeared to be the case...although there may be some other tweaks, idk.

It likely seems like SC isn't recommended as much around here because they don't make entry-level bikes. So unless you have a couple grand to spend, their name doesn't come up much.

I have two SC bikes and they're both great. A lot of the guys I ride with have SC's as well.

But wouldn't it be tough to have mechanical issues with something virtual?

But seriously, the pivots and bearings need maintenance and were/are prone to creaking. A simple application of anti-seize quickly takes care of the problem and prolongs the life of the hardware.

I suggest you buy a new Gen Bullit with Ext. BB pivot bearings. Don't you have a Stinky you can sell or something?

the only place i see SC bikes are in my garage and at the races. i never see 'em on the trails.

+1 to the "they cost too much" theory.

they're expensive, yep. they're also a different caliber of bike. I enjoy my chameleon. if they made road bikes (and if they were popular - i know they MADE one road bike), I'd buy a SC road bike. The bikes all look awesome and preform well. something that is designer and functional!

They're no more expensive than other similar bikes, they just don't make entry level bikes.

wow, I feel poorer just looking at that.

I would love to have the new carbon Blur XC... actually I would have really liked if they would have made it an 80mm travel race bike- that might just be me.
