General Cycling Discussion - Not many patriotic jerseys :-(

Today I wore my new Freedom to Ride jersey (you know: American flag, Statue of Liberty, fireworks, "In God We Trust", etc.) and I only saw one other rider wearing a patriotic jersey (stars and stripes) and one rider wearing patriotic shorts. Is patiotism "old-fashioned"? Am I one of the few cyclists who wears jerseys with a message or to support a cause?

I wore one of my USAF jerseys and shorts. The jersey sports the stars and stripes.

Nah, I jsut feel wearing anyhting with one of our national images printed across it, especially the flag, cheapens it. I'm not saying it's wrong...but i jsut wouldnt do it myself. I'm proud of my country and all it stands for, but I guess I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes to what I wear....heck I find most cycliing clothes too tacky for me....I want a plaid cycling jersey already!!!!! :mad: :D

Today I exercised my rights of free speech and swore off a bus driver that boxed me in. I call that patriotic.

It was the jersey of the month (special run) for July. I ordered mine the first week in June. It was shipped last week and arrived Friday.
Go to www.velowear.com to get the number for customer service. They may have a few extras.

i definately believe in wearing messages and supporting causes. that's why you won't see me sporting stars and stripes, unless it's of the adbusters sort.

It's not an actual flag but a representation of a flag. Just like those small flags (5" x 9") you can buy for $1 or so, it's not considered a flag.

Not that really give a rat's ass whether or not someone wears an American flag, but I'm curious where found this bit of wisdom? If an American flag is under a certain size or price, is it legal to burn, spit upon, or trample it? Please offer a citation for your assertation.

Each state uses the US Flag Code as a guide and determines what they consider a "flag" and the penalties to be. In New York, the small flags I mentioned aren't considered flags.

I also wear a jersey that depicts something I strongly support.

Interestingly, New York State Consolidated Laws, General Business chapter, Article 9-B, Section 136, Paragraph G, says just the opposite (emphasis mine):

"The words flag, standard, color, shield or ensign, as used in this
section, shall include any flag, standard, color, shield or ensign, or
any picture or representation, of either thereof, made of any substance,
or represented on any substance, and of any size, evidently purporting
to be, either of, said flag, standard, color, shield or ensign, of the
United States of America, or of the state of New York, or a picture or a
representation, of either thereof, upon which shall be shown the colors,
the stars, and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or by which
the person seeing the same, without deliberation may believe the same to
represent the flag, colors, standard, shield or ensign of the United
States of America or of the state of New York."

Again, I really don't care if you eat an American flag, I just think people should be able to back up assertations with citations.

Technically, a good old fashioned flag burning is the proper way to dispose of an old flag.

my paying taxes is the most patriotism GWB will get out of me.
