I've got an older XTR rear hub and the thing is driving me crazy. It used to make a grinding noise. I rebuilt it and it was still there. after a while it went away, but itdidn't hold speed very well. Rebuilt again and it's pretty smooth but it is still very slow, and sort of makes a pinging noise when being ridden, but nothing while it's in the stand.

I planned on getting new cones but it's too old to get a full set and I can only get the left cone.

Any suggestions? Anyone have an old rebuild kit or an xtr hub I can bastardize?

Is it making the noise when coasting? The freehub body may be shot.

it does make the noise while coasting.

if it's a freehub/cassette style, make sure that the freehub body is tightened properly to the hub. for this you need a 10mm allen key and also need to remove the axle to access it.

Sounds like the freehub body. The internal springs and pawls may be bashed and floating around in there, causing the noise that's driving you nuts. Take it to a LBS and see if they can find a replacement for you.
