I have the crazy idea of taking road bike tape (or tennis racquet tape) and using it to save weight. Good idea?

I'll give you a nickel for every gram you save.
I actually use road cork tape on my Mtb bars. I double wrap them for a more comfortable feel.
There's weight weenie then there's stupid. That one trends towards the stupid., sorry

Try Grab On foam MTB grips. A set weighs 79 grams! I use them on my SS rigid mtb for their shock absorbtion qualities; their being light as marshmallows is a bonus. They can be hard to find but don't buy any imitations (useless when wet).

I bet the accumulated dirt on your rig weighs more than the net savings you'll get. That being said, I'm using bar wrap and grips on my bullhorn bars (bars with integrated bar ends).
Talk about belt and suspenders.

Yeah but putting bar tape on bullhorns is easier than tryong to force regular grips on them.
