i have a new allez triple and one of the first things i wnat to upgrade is my wheels. I don't wanna skimp on the wheels(even though they're goin on a $600 bike) and my first choice right now is the mavic Ksyrium Elite's. My plan is that if/when i eventually get a nicer bike, i'll put these wheels on it. I wanted to know if anyone had any experience with them and if anyone had any other suggestions or recomendations for good, solid wheels in the same price range(front - $250 USD, rear - 300 usd). most of my riding is 30 to 40 mile rides(but i have only been riding for a little less than a month, 4 to 5 times a week). i have also joined a club, so i plan on doing more long rides. i do a lot of climbing, and i would like to do some entry level racing this fall if i can. Weight isn't a huge deal(it doesn't need to be extraordinarily light, but it's nic) - i'm mostly looking for quality and durability. thanks for all your help.

Ksyriums, or Cane Creeks are bang for your bucks as any.

Two other options that will probably end up being quite a bit lighter at around the same cost are Speed Dream (http://www.speeddream.com/road.php) and Odds and Endos (http://oddsandendos.safeshopper.com/2/cat2.htm?485). They're laced much more traditionally than the Kysriums but I can't comment on the durability. I'll probably spring for some of the R 359's when I change out my wheels.

G'day,

the best advice I can offer is .......save your money for awhile longer. As a cycling 'newbie', there is a huge amount of good, bad & indifferent advice & opinions to be had, most of which won't suit your particular situation. Enjoy your cycling for now, listen to all advice,(but not necessarily take it!) & learn as much as you can. When you have some idea about what is what, is the time to spend some money on upgrades that are suited to your cycling goals. Far to many people spend big bucks on upgrades that they neither use or need...take your time....you'll get better bang for your buck!. Having said that, kysiriums are very, very good wheels. If you are 'sold' on that idea, perhaps see if you can find a pair of 2nd hand 'SSC's' in good nick. You should be able find some at a similar price to new 'elites'. The weight savings & consequent performance gains make looking at this option worthwhile,

cheers
