Road Cycling - I wanna know EXACTLY what tires the pros use

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've found it difficult to find out EXACTLY what they use.

I don't just want brands, I wanna know what "real" brand they use (I once read on Velo News that Postal puts Hutchinson decals on Vittorias), I wanna know what model, what pressures, and what tires for different stages (time-trials, wet days, etc).

I'm pretty sure they don't do time-trials on the 23mm 'balloon' clinchers (with only 110psi) that we've been suckered into racing on.

If we're told that a 23mm tire at 120psi is the fasted (contact patch, etc), then why do they time-trial on 21mm tubulars pumped up the 170psi?

Thanks :)

It's all marketing fluff man, Postal trains on those blue and red Hutchinson clinchers when the camera is around, but come race day, Its Vittoria Tubulars.

During the Tour of Georgia, I was running around behind the barricades, taking photos and looking at shet.

Healthnet does indeed race on Maxxis Clinchers, just like the ad says..

I've got more info, but the Girl Friend is yelling at me to come to bed, Ill post more later.

they don't use tires. They use wheels.

In a few pictures you can see that Ag2R is using the new Michelin Tubeless clinchers. The tire has a light blue sidewall with black tread, and no stripes.

I have a few photos of O'grady riding tubulars, and I don't think Michelin makes a tubular. ill edit this post and add them in a bit.

Vittoria Corsa CX, with HUTCHINSON stenciled on.

O'Grady riding something other than Michelin Pro Race's..

Michelin Tubeless clincher, same tire as Ag2r has been using, who is also sponsored by Michelin.

tubeless clincher?

is that anything like tufo's tubular clincher or is it more like tubeless mtb tyres?

Nah, its like a car tire, it just mounts to the rim, you have to have rims that have no spoke holes through to the inside, like the ksyriums. The Tufo is a tubular, with some mounting lips on each side.
