I'm older, but in good cycling condition for my age; not frail, overweight or infirm in any way. I returned to cycling a couple of years ago and commute 10 miles a day to get to work, at a pretty good pace. I used to tour quite a bit and I know how to pace myself and negotiate traffic.

I'd like to venture a little farther some long weekend soon - take Bart to the Richmond station, leaving home early in the morning, then wend my way up to the wine country, using the bike lane on the new bridge span, stay in a hotel for a day or two -; tour around a bit and retrace the path. Does that sound do-able to you knowledgeable regional touring cyclists ?

I'm patient, careful, and don't expect the ride to be free of traffic; I expect it will be a bit unpleasant in stretches. Sound OK? I'd do it while long daylight hours prevail.

hmmm.... I don't know if you can cross the bridges un-motorized as they are all interstates. You might be better off going the long way over the golden gate.

But I'm sure someone has a better answer than me.

If you want to go to Napa starting in the east bay and then over the Benicia bridge - follow these instructions until you get to Lopes Road at Cordelia Road. At this point you can either connect to Hwy 12 and ride directly into Napa or you can take the back roads over Hwy 121 and Mt. George and into Napa through Monticello Road. I would suggest taking the latter route - although it's a good climb as the bike lane connection from Green Valley Road is in very poor condition.

You continue on Lopes Road over I-80 skipping the turn at Cordelia Road. Take your first right on Business Center Drive and follow that through it's intersection with Mangels Blvd - it turns into Westamerica Drive at that point. You'll come to at stoplight at the intersection with Suisun Valley Road and turn left on to Suisun Valley Road. You will follow Suisun Valley Road all the way until it ends at the intersection with Hwy 121. You will see the sign that says - Napa to the left and Lake Berryessa to the right. Take the left and climb up and over Mt. George. You will wind up in Napa right by Silverado Trail. Just keep an eye out for cars with boats this time of year. It's a great ride and very scenic.
