So, My roomie and I are looking to get some bicycles powder coated. What has to be done to the frame prior to taking it down to be sand blasted?

Also - the roomies bike is a Cannondale mtn bike with a head shok - will we be able to have the fork coated? I'm concerned about the grease and whatnot in the shock.

From my experience, you need to strip the frame of all components, including bottom bracket and head set. Any decals can be left on the frame. The powder coater will either sand blast or bead blast the frame and fork [this will remove the decals], wash them in their in-house cleaning system and then apply the powder of your choice.

As far ass a shock damped fork, it would be best to speak to the powder coater and see what he recommends. I'm guessing the shock would need to be gutted prior to powder coating due to the heat in the curing oven.

I wouldn't sandblast a Cannondale frame. The aluminum is VERY thin. Aircraft paint stripper would be my choice there. Maybe plastic media, or something else less aggressive- consult with the guy who is going to do the job beforehand.

+1 on gutting the fork. Powdercoating requires 400+ degree baking, which would probably blow out the seals on the fork.
