Mountain Biking - Trek 4300 Questions....

hey, im new here but ive been mtn biking for yrs but have gotten cheap mtn bikes from Target, Walmart etc. ( def. not good bikes) and they were all under 100. so now here i am 14 yrs old and i have 348 bucks, and looking for a "real" mountain bike. i'm looking into keep working and saving up for the trek 4300. Questions:
1) Price?
2) The front suspension has 70 mm travel. i weigh 110 and im 5'1. is that guna bottom out on me if im doing small jumps and trails?
3)I want the disc brakes version. Are they good disc brakes?
4) Over all, is this the bike for me? ( trails, little jumps, not guna beat the thing to death, but use it roughly....etc.

um, that really doesn't help AT ALL.. is there anyone WHO CARES out there to answer ppl's questions? isn't that what a forum is for? q's and tips, etc?

no, you will not bottom it out
dont get disc brakes... you'll have ****tier overall components and a heavier bike

itll probably be plenty for you..just keep it maintained

To begin with you asked questions that are rethorical. Who is gonna be able to make the decision if the bike is truly for you, and second of all questions 1 and 3 can be solved by doing a little research. Especially the price bit, have you even gone to a store to look at the dam thing. You wanna find out if a fork will bottom out on you on small jumps? It's called a curb. Give me a break and calm yourself down. I gave you a link to a topic thats been done a lot and it's at the top of the page. You'd be suprised your'e not the first one to ask about the 4300 :eek:

im not talking about a curb...i ment small jumps as in 1-3 feet....i use wooden jumps so i was j/w about it. im going to my bike shop to see how much it is sumtime thiss week. i'll keep u posted....

First of all I think the sticky $500 Mountain Bike Thread is worthless. It seems that there a few experts that are tired of hearing the same questions over and over. That is too bad but the sticky does nothing to help newb's or even senior members learn about certain bikes. THe sticky certainly couldn't address your question.

Unfortunately I can't answer your specific questioins either. I have logged over 3000 miles on my Trek 4300's in the past several months. (i have two) However I don't think I ride the way you intend to.

1. THe price is very much in line with other competitors in this price range.

2. I am 6'2 145 lbs. I don't do "jumps" but i have ridden a long ways and over a variety of terrain on these RST forks. I have them adjusted as stiff as possible as that is what is best for me. They rarely move much.

3. I don't have disc brakes.

4. Nobody can tell you if this is the bike for you. If you tear anyting up, it will break. THis is an entry level recreational use mountain bike so you can't expect it to hold up to severe abuse. If you take care of it and ride like i do, it might last you a lifetime. (or something near that)

k thanks...i plan to do mini jumps like on trails but nothing to serious. And i'm not planning to beat the thing the death, but i will use it rough. i also agree the 500$ mtb sticky helps no1 what so ever.... thanks again

The POINT of the $500 MTB thread was to help people with questions EXACTLY like the one that you asked at the top of the thread.
You're not the first person who has ever asked about the Trek 4300 and you damn sure won't be the last. I started that thread to stop the useless propagation of threads asking the SAME QUESTION over and over again. If you have a question relating to a bike in that catagory and it hasn't been covered yet in that thread ASK IN THE THREAD. The reason it's there is as a one stop shop for the $500 crowd.

As for your continued useage of AOL'ese (no1, u, etc) I will remind you that it is against Forum Guidelines (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=22263&highlight=forum+guidelines) and ask that you stop using it here.

The response to the original post may not be overwhelmingly positive, but everyone's just tired of seeing the same posts over and over. I know if I see the terms Trek 4300 or 4500 in another post I might scream.

A good resource to read about bikes, other than using the search function on this board (http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=54317), please visit http://www.mtbr.com they have a lot of reviews by people that actually ride what you are looking for.

I must say and I mean no disrespect there have been a lot of questions about which bike is best for me and a lot of these have to do with entry level bikes like the Trek 4300.
