Commuting - 3-speed Commuter Project - first pics

I've started back on the project I reported in April. She's just under 25 lbs as shown. I have honjo fenders and a high tech LED generator light waiting for installation.

I had to file the front fork to fit the axle but the big parts are put together. I'm having a hard time figuring out the cabling, etc. The provided brake cable (complete with housing) is double ended. It won't install into the brakes. I also don't have a shifter solution.

I think the double ended brake cables are meant to have one end cut off. They put a MTB end on one side, and a road one on the other. Figure out which one your brakes need, and cut the other one off. This way the shop only has to stock one type of cable.

That is how many bare cables work. This one has a MTB end (that's what I need) and a special end that hooks under the drum brake lever. The MTB end cannot thread through the bar end levers I have installed.

Weird, I can't see how you'd adjust the cable length or trim the housing if the cable is supposed to stay double-ended.

Nice ride. I think that you have the front wheel in backwards. The brake arm should be on the left side. I had the same problem when I installed one of those XFDD hubs on a recumbent; I needed a longer cable.

In the box that the hub came in should be a fitting with a hole through the centre and a bolt that goes into the end called a pinch bolt. It allows you to snip the cable end off and put a new cable with the road fitting you need into the housing. It has a Sturmey Archer part number HSK715.

Sturmey Archer have for 2009 made some new shifters including a bar-end shifter and a thumbie for the three speed hubs according to the 2009/2010 catalogue (http://www.sturmey-archer.com/pdfs/Sturmey-Archer_2009-2010_Catalogue.pdf).

The Bar End shifter is part number HSJ966.

The Thumbie is HSJ965.

They do a trigger shifter, part number HSJ943 and two Twist-grip shifters part numbers HSJ927 & HSJ939.

You may have to run a bolt on pulley to route the shift cable where you want it. The part numbers are HSJ521 (28.6mm) or HSJ520 (25.4mm)

I think I know what you're talking about - I installed a Sturmey-Archer X-FD front drum brake hub on my cruiser, and the supplied brake cable wasn't long enough. I found that there's a part that you can order, a "pinch bolt", that will allow you to use any brake cable (road or mtn end), so long as you install this pinch bolt on the end that interfaces with the brake arm of the hub.

1. The double ended brake cables probably have two different nipples on it. Compare both sides. Find out which nipple you need, get rid of the other one and you'll be able to fit the cable.

2. Just for looks, I'd flip the handlebar. Gives it a bit more aggressive look.
