I rarely use the smaller chainring but I really do not want to turn my bike into a fixie. So I was wondering; can the shimano alfine FC-S500 crankset (http://www.shimano.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/us/index/products/0/alfine/product.-code-FC-S500.-type-.html) be used with 8/9/10 speed regular (tiagra/105/ultegra etc) cassettes? Can I use the CN-HG53 super narrow chain that shimano recommends for the crank set and keep the rear cassette/derailleur setup? I would really like to do this because:
1. like i said, dont have much use for smaller ring,
2. saves me money on front derailleur + shifter!!
3. looks cleaner and simple
with all that said, can this be done or will my chain keep falling off? will the shifting in the rear still be functional?
on a side note, has anyone used this item? how does the quality compare with other multi chainring cranksets shimano has?
