Road Cycling - Rookie Q: Difference between Road and Mtn Helmets???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

ok, so I'm just getting in to road riding, in fact I don't even have my own bike yet, but I'm getting all my things together to prepare myself.

I don't have tons of cash, so with that said, I'm on a mission to find a reasonably priced helmet for cycling on the road. Are road helmets different that mountain bike helmets?

One other requirement, because I have a large head, I need a large (wider) helmet. If it helps, when I rode my motorcycles I wore a Shoei RF800 XL helmet.

From the limited research I've done, I see that the Giro Atlas II helmet is for larger heads, but that's all I've found so far.

Any of you have suggestions on helmets I should check out? Also, does anyone know of a GOOD bike shop in the South (San Francisco) Bay Area?

Thanks in advance,
Ron

MTB bike helmets generally have a visor on them while road bikes don't. No one says you have to leave the visor on.

For inexpensive helmets (they all meet the same standards only aren't as cool looking) try Wal-Mart, Dicks, or other mass merchandiser that sells bikes.

ahhh...ok, so are the visors removable on these helmets?

I haven't heard of Dick's before, they have an online store?

Thanks TR!
