Tandem Cycling - Tandem cycling in Oahu

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

We are going to be in Oahu (Honolulu) the first week of Nov to watch our daughter play college volleyball. We will have about 3 days for cycling on the tandem.
Has anyone in this group ridden a road bike in Oahu? We want to go around the island. Can that be done in one day? Or, should we schedule a 2 day trip for that?
Thanks in advance,

You might want to send off a note to Rob Templin of Second Summer Tours (http://www.secondsummertours.com/). He runs winter tours over on Maui but I'd bet he would be able to offer tips on riding around on Oahu as well.
His Email is: secondsummertours@hotmail.com
I'm sure he won't mind and you can mention that Mark L. from Atlanta offered up his consulting services.
The "Round the Island" bike race is 113 miles and skips Ka'ena Point and the Leeward side of the island. So the race route is do-able in a day. If you want to do the whole circumference of the island you are looking at 140+ miles and a fairly difficult sandy/off road section around Ka'ena Point.
Traffic is nasty even on weekends.

Actually his name is Rob Templin. He used to live in the area and I have ridden with him on occaision.
I've done a few rides in Maui but none on Oahu. I agree the traffic there can be bad.

Rob still hanging around in the Eugene OR area?
He leads tours in Hawaii and South America, among other places.
Have known him for decades. Used to ride cross country on tandems, as stoker, with Penseyres.

I heard Rob moved to Tustin of all places. Saw him on a ride last year.
Pete Penseyres has a ride every Wednesday which I go on sometimes.
Even at 65 the guy beats us all up the hills which there plenty and steep.
