Utility Cycling - Xtracylce and trail-a-bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My daughter got bored with riding on the back of my Xtracycle with my son and
wanted me to find a way to attach her tag-a-long to the back of it. Luckily, I
have a pretty talented neighbor who designed, and fabricated, a bracket "system"
for me.
The rear post attaches in three places to the uploader bars. It allows quite bit
of vertical adjustment for the tag-a-long to attach to. My neighbor was quite
concerned about "low amplitude fatigue stress" that the system would put on the
bars because they are made out of aluminum instead of steel- unlike the rest of
the Xtracycle kit. As a result, he built me an extra brace for the front of the
rack to tie into the frame.
The end result is the sturdiest thing I've seen yet to attach her bike to mine.

Very nice, and you have a beautiful family. Where do you ride with your kids?
I used to tow my daughters in an Equinox trailer. They're big now (20 and 17 years), but giving that trailer away was a dumb thing for me to do.

I live in one of the best biking cities in the country, Madison, so we bike everywhere- zoo, school, swimming pool, grocery shopping, parks, farmer's market, restaurants, libraries, etc.
I started with the trailer for the kids when they were small, then moved one up onto the back of the Xtra when they got old enough. Eventually I had both kids on the Xtra, and still ride that way for short trips, but my daughter really wanted to do some pedaling by herself so we came up with this. The nice part about the trailer was that they would be completely dry when we got stuck in a rainstorm.

You should post this to the Xtracycle Wiki site they have. They have a section of all the mods people have made for the Xtra so they are easy to find. This looks great.

Very cool. Can you provide a materials list and a quick how to? This could be very useful.
I made a new snapdeck that has an extra handlebar attached to it which would fit a trail-a-bike great, but was worried about the snapdeck flying off the frame. Perhaps I should try some of those hose clamps to attach the snap deck to the frame.

In the back there are two bars welded together in a cross formation. Each since has a little flange welded to it to wrap part way around the bars. The hose clamps attach to the frame in three separate locations. They are not attached to the snapdeck in any way and the snap deck could be taken off and it would still work.
The front cross bar has flanges welded to it so they wrap part way around the bars and are secured with hose clamps- just like the back. Rack straps are then used to tie them into the frame for more stability.
