The sidewalks on the Saint John's bridge have been closed for about 6 months now as the bridge undergoes a complete renovation. That is my one good path path into Forest Park. I haven't got the guts to ride on the constricted road deck as the lanes are 10 feet wide and people haul across the bridge, so I've only been out there once in that time with a friend who has a truck. In the meantime, it's been short rides along the river and commuting.
So, the itch got to me and I grabbed a Yakima Mo Joe rack for my car. The instructions that everyone told me to follow to the letter were wrong for my car, but I got it figured out and it's reasonably stable. As soon as I got back from my parents for the 4th, I headed out to the park. Most of the real trails are marked hikers only, but I came across a completely unmarked path that didn't look impossibly steep so I took it. It turned out that the other end was marked no bikes, but too late then.
It was a blast. The trail was called Wildwood. Only moderately technical, but fast and very narrow, with plenty of curves following the hillside. I didn't see another person the entire time I was on this trail. About 1 hour of my 2 hour ride was cruising across this trail. I managed at some point to brush my entire left arm against some nettles, but not bad. To finish off, I turned off a side trail that led back to the doubletrack. It was only about 500 feet, but great a great technical stretch down the hillside that made a good ending.
I am absolutely kicking myself for not bringing my camera with me today. The trail was gorgeous. I can't believe I've got no pictures to show from it.
Hope everyone elses Independence Day rides were good. :)
