The sidewalks on the Saint John's bridge have been closed for about 6 months now as the bridge undergoes a complete renovation. That is my one good path path into Forest Park. I haven't got the guts to ride on the constricted road deck as the lanes are 10 feet wide and people haul across the bridge, so I've only been out there once in that time with a friend who has a truck. In the meantime, it's been short rides along the river and commuting.

So, the itch got to me and I grabbed a Yakima Mo Joe rack for my car. The instructions that everyone told me to follow to the letter were wrong for my car, but I got it figured out and it's reasonably stable. As soon as I got back from my parents for the 4th, I headed out to the park. Most of the real trails are marked hikers only, but I came across a completely unmarked path that didn't look impossibly steep so I took it. It turned out that the other end was marked no bikes, but too late then.

It was a blast. The trail was called Wildwood. Only moderately technical, but fast and very narrow, with plenty of curves following the hillside. I didn't see another person the entire time I was on this trail. About 1 hour of my 2 hour ride was cruising across this trail. I managed at some point to brush my entire left arm against some nettles, but not bad. To finish off, I turned off a side trail that led back to the doubletrack. It was only about 500 feet, but great a great technical stretch down the hillside that made a good ending.

I am absolutely kicking myself for not bringing my camera with me today. The trail was gorgeous. I can't believe I've got no pictures to show from it.

Hope everyone elses Independence Day rides were good. :)

Sounds like great riding man. I didn't get an Independence day ride and I'm mad. But I did get to light off some fireworks!

Excuse my ignorance, but what are "nettles"?

How wonderful the stinging nettles are. Living in England and especially Swindon it is a known factor that every Mountain Bikererer takes into account when out on the trails. Back in the days of the Raleigh rigid dirt jumping I quite often found myself careering head first into the stinging little green weed that has no real use.

Although Nettle soup is quite nice.

I don't know if they're any different here than in England or if they're an invasive species someone carried over, but they itch and little else. I seldom have any trouble with them here. My bane is blackberries.

Oh, I definitely love eating the blackberries. The ones growing in the clearcut by my home are the best...a little bit tart, a lot of juice. I swear though, there must be some kind of chemical on the thorns that makes them hurt more than regular wounds. On the bike I stick to the trails. On foot though, I get curious and go exploring, which means lots of deep pricks and cleaning juice/bloodstains off my clothes.
